Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    file handles - vista

If the answer to this is archived, I'm sorry -- I did try a search.
I have a new computer with (alas) windows vista, home. I have copied my A4V7 to the c drive. But, when attempting to run it, I get the message about needing more file handles.
So-- how do I increase the number of file handles??

Thanks. OK to a point- I have found config.nt, opened it in notepad, changed the "files" line.... BUT windows won't let me save the revised file!! Any windows geeks out there who can tell me what i'm doing wrong or need to do?

OK, after a night to sleep on it, and a little research:

This is a new computer, I am the only account and thus automatically (or so I believe) the Admin.

When I try to save the modified config.nt file, I get a dialog box with the message

            "Cannot create file C:\\Windows\System32\config.nt file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct."

From here I can get to another window, telling me that ...config.nt already exists and asking if I want to replace it. When I choose "Yes," I get back to the same dialog box (above).

Any thoughts appreciated. I really don't want to spend the money and emotional energy to call Microsoft help!

Although I don't have Vista, I believe that the config.nt file has a read-only attribute. You would have to clear that in order to save the new version. Now this, of course, is for Vista 32. There is no config.nt in Vista 64 as it does not support 16 bit apps.

By the way, why would you want to pay anybody for this kind of info. As this isn't an Alpha problem, you should just try Google. When I typed in Vista and config.nt, my goodness what a lot of help for free.

                Re: file handles - vista

Clearing read-only doesn't seem to do it. However, your suggestion to Google is helpful, hopefully I would eventually have come to that.
I don't and wouldn't want to pay anybody for info that Microsoft should supply free in support of their software. I came first to the Alpha message board because I figured there must be a number of people in the community who have already had to deal with this issue with Vista, and that there must be a thread available with the solution. Surprisingly, there doesn't appear to be. When I come up with the solution, I'll post it for others.

If you are still having problems, go to www.giveawayoftheday.com and download the free program for today - WinUtilities 6.4. It will allow you to edit your config files as well as a lot of other things. But you must download and install today for it to be free.

OK, finally done it with the procedure given in a Google search result (credit Josh Guest):
                    1. From the Start menu, go to "All Programs", "Accessories"
                    2. Right-click on "Command Prompt" and choose "Run As Administrator"
                    3. Click "Allow" from the ConsentUI prompt
                    4. In the resulting command window, enter "regedit" and press Enter
                    5. In regedit, browse to "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Winlogon
                    6. Add a new key at that level called SpecialAccounts
                    7. In the SpecialAccounts key, create a sub-key called UserList
                    8. At this point the path is: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList
                    9. In the UserList key, create a new value of type DWORD(32 bit) called Administrator and set the value to 1

Complicated, but I can attest it works. A simpler sounding solution is posted at
