Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Keep track of changed/new records - AfterUpdate event does not work

    I want the field chngdate (which is in the grid) to be set to today's date when a user changes anything and clicks "submit". My understanding of the AfterUpdate event is to use the following xbasic code:

    function AfterUpdateRecords as v (Args as P, PageVariables as P)
    with PageVariables
    Datasubmitted.changedate = Date()
    end with
    end function

    This doesn't seem to work. Why?

    Two things:

    First, it may just be a typo, but you call the field chngdate in your description, but changedate in the script.

    Second, put your script in the CanUpdateRecord event.

      Re: Keep track of changed/new records - AfterUpdate event does not work

      I fixed the apparent typo in my first description. The actual field name is "Pchngdate" and the code now looks like this:

      function CanUpdateRecord as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p, Result as p )
      with PageVariables
      Datasubmitted.Pchngdate = Date()
      end with
      end function

      It still doesn't work. I checked the actual table after closing the browser thinking that the browser just didn't see the update, but it really didn't work.

      I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated.

        I haven't used this function in a while, but I think date needs to be converted to a character field so I would recommend trying dtoc(date()).

          Dan,

          Thanks for the response, but it still won't work. I would think trying to set the value of a date field using the Date() function would work, but that makes too much sense.

            Re: Keep track of changed/new records - AfterUpdate event does not work

            If you want, you can choose Answer D, none of the above. Go to table Field Rules for your pchngdate field and make it a calculated field, set the calc to date(). When you create a new record, or change an existing one, the date will change to the current date. Calc Field Rules work from the web when the record is changed.

            If you do want the function to go in the grid events, then your Datasubmitted.Pchngdate = Date() is accurate. What you may be forgetting is that this pchngdate field MUST be in the field selections in order to work. You can make it type Hidden and Hide Row to make it disappear, but it must be in the selected column for the grid*. Also, put the code in both canUpdate and CanInsert since I assume you want this date to apply both on change and on new records.

            * That rule does not apply if you use the first method I suggest above.

              Re: Keep track of changed/new records - AfterUpdate event does not work

              Got me stumped. This code is straight out of one of my applications, and it works fine:

              Code:

              function CanUpdateRecord as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p, Result as p )
              with PageVariables
              DataSubmitted.Changewas = "Updated record"
              DataSubmitted.Changeby = session.__protected__UserId
              DataSubmitted.Changedt = date()
              DataSubmitted.Tochange = .t.
              Result.Cancel = .f.
              Result.ErrorHTML = ""
              end with
              end function
              Changedt is defined at a date field in my table.

              Are you using dbf tables?

                Re: Keep track of changed/new records - AfterUpdate event does not work

                Hi Pat

                I have been utilising your code in my grid events with great success, many thanks for your code! I do have one question though, can this be adapted to use to capture the details for deleted records? I have used your code in the CanUpdate event and the CanInsert event, but when I use the same code in the CanDelete event, the three values as shown below:

                DataSubmitted.ChangeDate = now()-60
                DataSubmitted.ChangeType = "Delete"
                DataSubmitted.ChangeBy = session.__protected__userid

                arent filtering through to my SQL server audit table. The remaining record fields are being captured though. Do you have any idea where I have gone wrong?

                Many thanks

                Jason

                      is whatever you are using classed as a field type Date in the structure.

                        Yes, the change date is set as a datetime field in SQL server. I dont think that should have any bearing because the code is working within the other events, but I could be wrong???

                          If you are using datetime in SQL you may need to use now() not Date(). or maybe curdate().

                            Hi Chad

                            Ahh ok. Happy to try it, does the SQL datetime only create an issue with the candeleterecord event perhaps, but not the insert and update because they are working fine?

                            Cheers

                              Hello again

                              Thanks for the suggestion, but the three values (change date, change time and changed by) arent flowing through to SQL server

                              For the record I just deleted, the SQL audit table created a record, but the change date, time and changed by fields from the previous update were inserted, not the new change details ie current time, current user and change type "delete"

                              Cheers

                              Jason
