Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Embedded Browse Not Changing With Parent

I have a rather simple set where I have a form that shows a parent of Walkers with the children Sponsors of the Walkers. I have a form with the Parent Walkers and the Sponsors in an Embedded Browse.

My issue is when I click or move from one parent record to the next the embedded browse intermittently does not change to the children for the parent. In other words when I go from record to record in the browse will remain the same until I click the heading of the embedded browse.

It also looks like as I click through the parents the scrolling bar on the embedded browse will move although the records are not changing for the embedded browse with the parent. This is rather confusing for my users.

I hope my description makes sense. I saw some searches that looked similar, but not quite anything that helped me out.

I have posted a bitmap image of the form. Anyone know what I am missing in this equation. I actually have a few places where I have this issue and would love to get it settled. Thanks for any assistance in this matter.

Patrick, a useful debugging technique is to check the behavior Alpha supplies when using the "default form" for your set. Right click the set name in the control panel, and choose option to open default form. When you navigate from walker to walker does the browse keep up? If so, that's an indicator that the trouble lies in your custom form. If not, that's an indicator that the trouble lies in field rules.

I see also you have a number of other forms open while testing the troubled form. Might you be running out of resources on an underpowered machine? Does the problem go away if the other forms are closed?

Re: Embedded Browse Not Changing With Parent

        Patrick,
I see a field Walker id number and Walk id special in the parent and walk id special in the child (browse). The walker id special values between the parent and child do not match. The values between the walker id number in the parent and walk id special in the child do match. Is the set link based upon those two fields ie parent: walker id number and child: walk id special, or is there something else that you have done for the link that might explain your issue?

          Tom,

Thanks for you insights it looks like the problem is my custom form. Other than starting over with the default form is there any hint as to what could cause this issue in the form.

This would not be too difficult to fix, but I have a tabbed form with an embedded browse that is giving me the same problem and if it is a form issue it will be a chore to rebuild. Just wondering if you have some ideas as to what could be the form issue.

I will need to use your debugging technique to check this other form but the default form is full so the embedded browse will not appear. Any suggestions?

I did try to use the form with all the other forms closed and had the same problem, so it does look like a form issue. If you have some suggestions, on what it could possibly be with the form, I would appreciate it.

            Mike,

Thanks for the close look at the form and specifically the ID Numbers. I don't think my links are and issue on this. Everything concerning this one to many set seem to be in order with the linking ID.

It looks like from Tom's debugging procedure it may be the form. Now I need to figure out that issue. I did his procedure and all worked fine.

            Thanks,
            Patrick

              So Patrick,
What are the fields that you are using in the parent and child for the link? Probably walker id number not shown in browse?

Re: Embedded Browse Not Changing With Parent

                Mike,

You are correct the linking Id is Walker Id. You are the man. I have redone the form and it is now working fine. It must have been something with the form.

I still wish I knew what that could be. As I have another issue like this in another set, but there are so many fields the default form does not show the embedded browse. If you have any hints as to where to look for problems I would love the assistance. Or if there is another way to debug the form, I would love to have that information.

Thanks for the very timely help. You guys are great.

                God Bless You,
                Patrick
