Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Problem installing Geotrust SSL certificate ...

I bought and recieved an SSL premium certifcate from GeoTrust. I ma getting an error message:

Unable to read certificate file for Secure Sockets layer. Certificat emust be in x.509 format.

I have confirmed with GeoTrust that the certificate IS in x.509 format.

I have read the help file, and clicked on the link to GeoTrust within that help file for instructions on how to install the certificate to various servers. Alpha is NOT listed!

    So how would I proceed?

    bump.

GeoTrust is listed as one of the few sites that is mentioned in alpha's help file. So it is surprising to me that Alpha is not listed on Geotrust's site as one of the web app servers that they support.

Regardless, given this, does anyone know how I should proceed? Has anyone used GeoTrust?

Verify that you are using the correct key file and passphrase used when you generated your CSR.

        Thanks for responding Lenny,

Yes, it is correct. In fact, the server control panel "remembered" those values from when I created the CSR.

Upload your certificate and key file at https://secure.alphafiveonline.com/Upload/ and send me an email with the passphrase and I will take a closer look at it for you.

Gary, your CRT file is not in the correct format. The lines should not be double spaced, the first line should be -----BEGIN CERTIFICATE----- and the last line should be -----END CERTIFICATE-----. I suspect that you created the file by copying and pasting from a GeoTrust web page and did not copy quite enough. After manually adding the first and last lines and removing the empty lines, I was able to load your certificate and start the Application Server using it.

                  Hi Lenny,

You are indeed (of course) correct! That was it.

But now for the million dollar question. To get this working, I believe I need to simply check the enable ssl box, and then indicate port 443 on the first page.

However, when I do that, and then try to access the site with the same address as I have been using, with exception of changing the http to https, and the :8080, to :443, the site does not come up. Is there something else I need to do?

Hopefully this is an easy question.

                  Thanks!!

                  Gary

                    Okay,

I had a long talk with register.co, which is where I have my domain name registered. The issue that is preventing the SSL from working is that I have web site forwarding enabled. Since I am using port 8080 (will not work on port 80 for whatever reason), and because I have the apllication in a folder below the web root, I need to use forwarding. That prevents, they say, the SSL from working.

They say my options are to host my own DNS server on the server, or do away with forwarding by using port 80 (i don't know how to get this to work) and move the aplplicatin files to the webroot. That way, they say, when a user types in my domain name in their browser, the ip address of my server will be directed to directly.

Has anyoane encountered this difficulty in getting SSL to work on their own server, and is the above accurate??

bump - I am also wondering how I can get my server to use port 80. Where on the server do you release whatever process is uing port 80 so that I can have the alpha WAS use it?

And does it make sense that I would move the entire application up a level to be directly within the webroot. I am willing to do that if required to get this to work, but it seems that should not be necessary.

                      Please advise.

I think your running IIS server :
shutdown you iis webserver ( that default running port 80) by Services
Go back to AWS change 8080 to 80 restart AWS
If that don't help send me a mail I help you by remote support (RDP)

                          cheers

If you have a cable provider make sure they open port 80 for you. or login your account and manage the ports.
                            Just a suggestion.

                              Hi guys,

I am not running IIS, just the alpha WAS.

I am not using a cable provider - I am using AT&T DSL.

One interesting thing though. On my server, I cannot get out to the internet with a browser. If I try to do so with either Mozilla or IE, it tells me there is no connection. However, that server "serves" the pages just fine, and I can ftp files back and forth with no problem.

Do you have any idea what might be causing this behavior?
