Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Record selection help for newbie please

Although I have completed several projects using PHP & MySQL I am new to Alpha 5, and must admit I am struggling somewhat.

I apologise in advance for asking what will probably appear a dumb question, but it has me stumped.

I have a table containing client info. Each record has a field with the client name, and another with a unique client ID.

I want the user to be able to select the client by name and write the client ID to a variable for use in a script.

If I use an X_dialog box to display the client names in a list I can only pass the client name to the variable, not the client ID.

I have tried using a browse on a form, but there only seems to be an on-event option for double-clicking a row. I would like the user to just highlight the client and click on a button to execute the script, using the client ID in the variable.

I am sure this is a simple operation, but I am tearing what little hair I have left out. Perhaps my problem is being too familiar with an alternative system (PHP/MySQL).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
If computers are so clever how come someone as dumb as me has to tell them what to do?

You can have a button in a field in a browse (will appear in each row).
    There can be only one.

You can do both while display the client's name only.

Post a sample of what you have done. It would be easier to modify it than to do something completely different.

        Thanks Stan.

I know have a button on each row of the browse. Now I have to work out how to get them to actually do anything ;)

This would be my preferred option - what is it you need me to post?

Sorry to seem dim, but I don't have much experience of Alpha5 or these forums

Here is an example with a couple of options, with browse button and progressive lookup. The code for the browse buttons is under the Browse Event.

                  Your welcome Paul,
Stan's is basically the same example except he placed his on a Browse not an embedded browse on a form.

Re: Record selection help for newbie please

Just as an aside note for other newbies like me..........

The problems I was having displaying the client ID in the xdialog were due to the auto-increment field being set to 'Numeric', rather than 'Character'.

I had imported the data from an Access database, and just accepted the datatype automatically set by Alpha's import routine.

A quick change of datatype to character followed by padl(alltrim(client_id),11,"0") on all records, and everything started working as per examples.

MORAL - check your field datatypes ....... don't just accept what you are given when importing data.
