Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Script behaves differently on different computer

I am puzzled and hope someone can explain what is happening. There are two computers that are working in the same database. My computer has a Pentium 4 2.4GHz processor with 1 GB Ram. The other has a Celeron processor 1.8GHz with 1 GB RAM.

This is a fairly complex database with a number of tables, forms with many calculated fields, and quite a few scripts.

Everything works fine except one series of scripts that are activated by a button on a form. These scripts parse a memo field (of any size) into 150 character entries which it enters into a field in a different form. When finished with the last entry it pops up a dialog box asking whether you want to update a date on yet a different form. The scripts are controlled by conditional expressions. The variables in those conditional expressions are initially set by field rule and form events, and some are changed within the running of the scripts.

When the scripts are programmed from my computer (Pentium) they work correctly on my computer, but generate error boxes on the other (Celeron) computer that give the name of a variable, the equation, and state "Too many parameters."

When I go the the other (Celeron) computer, delete the variable definition, and all changes to it in scripts, then reenter the definitions and changes from that computer it works perfectly on that computer, but causes my computer to generate the popup dialog box with every 150-character entry (rather than when the parsing is completed) because the variables are not being properly set/reset.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Hi Marilyn,

You fail to mention where the dat resides and if you are using shadowed tables.

Others can ask better questions maybe, but I would need that knowledge to start thinking about what could be happening.

Re: Script behaves differently on different computer

The data resides on a separate server.

I am not sure what shadowed tables are. Each of the other two computers (1 Pentium, 1 Celeron) directly access the data from the server. They do not store any data on their computers.

      Thanks for your help.

Re: Script behaves differently on different computer

        Marilyn,
I assume you have both PC's running same OS ie XP or windows 2000 etc. If not that may be source of problem. Also check in Windows, control panel, Regional & Language Options date settings for Time, Short Date, and Long Date. If both PC's are not set the same this could be your problem give you noted that you mentioned "date" in your scripts.
I had issue where one PC used European date setup and other PC's used US and the date would be switched meaning 31/12/08 instead of 12/31/08. So you could have in your script some Char to Date formating that will be incorrect if the European formating is used. A5 uses for some functions the OS (Windows) system time formatting.

        Hope that helps
        Peter

Marilyn, are you running the same version and build of Alpha Five on both machines?

Thanks for your comments, Peter and Tom.

I checked the date and time formats. They are the same.

You may be onto something, Tom. I thought both computers would have been the same version and build because I thought I purchased both copies of Alpha at the same time. However they are not the same. My computer (the Pentium) has Alpha Five, version 7, build 4130, with system addins build 3033. The Celeron computer has Alpha Five, version 7, build 3880, with system addins build 3005.

Could this be the source of the problems? What should I do next?

Note- I have purchased Alpha Five, version 9, but have not installed it yet. I wanted to finish the database I have been working on before tackling version 9.

            Thanks!

Re: Script behaves differently on different computer

              Marilyn,

The different versions of v7 can be fixed by running the latest update patch on each computer. I don't think that will repair your problem but maybe.

I would think the problem arises from not running shadowed and all data is live on both computers by way of a path.

you may be using mapped drives and they may be different on the 2 computers. If there is a reference to a drive latter in any script, it can fail to run properly. Example: computer "a" has a mapped drive to the program on server, and the mapped drive is "m" while computer "B" uses mapped drive "L".

              Hope it Helps
