Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Proper method to hide, show control panel

    What is the correct method to hide and show the control panel?
    I put an "on activate" xbasic statement on my menu form controlpanel.hide().
    Then, I put a button on the form which says
    ControlPanel.show()
    ControlPanel.activate()
    Belt_Menu.activate()
    parentform.code.canexit=""

    The control panel hides fine
    But, clicking the button to show it again doesn't do anything.
    I had hoped to password protect the button after I got it working.
    Is it the Belt_Menu.activate() that hides it again?

    Yes, it appears that's my problem. If I delete that line, it seems to work.

    controlpanel.show() should be all you need to display the control panel. Granted with just this command the control panel will be behind the form you are currently working on.

    As far as what is the proper method, it all depends on when and how you want to hide control panel. There is not a right or a wrong answer in this case.

    The most basic and easiest way is to use the database properties to control the controlpanel. You will have to select a form to be the default form, once done you can then specify to hide the control panel.

    Another method would be to use the autoexec script to control if the controlpanel is hidden or shown.

    *Edit
    Is your menu that has the OnActivate event also the same form that is represented by the pointer Belt_menu? If so, then yes that is why your control panel is being hidden. You display the controlpanel then activate the Belt_menu which OnActivate hides the control panel. Might be easier to have your hide statement elsewhere. For example, the OnInit event, autoexec script, or using the database properties choices.

      OK, great hints. Yes, the Belt_Menu is the form that opens automatically when you open the database. It is a menu form based on a menu table which basically has only one record. I have a button on that form that allows editing, as you can see from the code I included in the first message. After posting my question, I tried different things and it works OK with only a few glitches. When I click on the button, the control panel appears and the menu is behind it. When I click on the menu tab (at the bottom of the screen to bring it to the forefront) the control panel disappears again. But, if I use the control panel, I can access the menu form and go into the design function to make edits. So, actually, it is doing what I wanted and I successfully password protected the button.

        Re: Proper method to hide, show control panel

        My thoughts (untested):

        ControlPanel.show()
        ControlPanel.activate()
        OK so far.
        Belt_Menu.activate()
        Yes, that would put the Belt_Menu in front of the control panel again.
        parentform.code.canexit=""
        Hmmm, depending on what it is, the fact that you have some CanExit code may keep the control panel from showing even if the Belt_Menu wasn't being activated. I have a Menu_MAIN form with some CanExit code to keep the user from closing it unless they click my Exit button. I also have a very customized button that is used to show the control panel (or switch to design mode, or the code tab, or any other form that is open). In previous versions of A5 I could still get it to easily switch to the control panel but in v9 I had to go through some special gyrations to get it to work. I essentially had to create an xdialog that opened for a brief time - so brief that it can't be seen - in order to get the Menu_MAIN form to close and allow me to switch to the control panel. A ui_msg_box() also did the trick but I had to close that one manually. (But it's not a bug. Well, not one that anyone but me would ever run into.)

        You might try moving the parentform.code.canexit="" to the first line. That might help the controlpanel.activate()

          Re: Proper method to hide, show control panel

          Hi Cal
          The code
          parentform.code.canexit=""
          is on the menu form so the operator can't close it.
          I have code on the menu form on the CanExit event that says cancel()

          So, I reset that with parentform.code.canexit="" so I can close or edit the form.

            Cal
            I moved the parentform.code.canexit="" to the first line.
            Then, I changed the controlpanel.hide() to the Onit event instead of the Activate event and it works exactly the way I wanted it to.

            Thanks again.

              OOPS
              It ain't working so great after all. After this, if I activate the control panel, I can't open the interactive window, for some reason. I don't know which command affected that function.
