Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Print a report on web server printer?

IS there any way to print a report to a specific printer which is on the web server?

I have been looking around the help and have not come up with anything.

    Thanks

Blueberries again? I expect you want to run some unmanned operation that kicks out a report to a printer attached to the server. I think you and I looked at some PDF printing product in the past that did exactly that. It may have been the WatchDirectory program, which I think you have seen. Go to http://www.watchdirectory.net/index.html and browse for Print PDF.

Steve working on that right now thanks.

Still we should be able to call a printer from the web server for many other reporting.....issues. I see how the watchdirectory will wok fine in this instants, though though would like to just print.

Re: Print a report on web server printer?

The way you would use watchDirectory (or other tools like this) is you print your PDF to a folder location and WatchDirectory sees that file, prints it to your 'default' printer. WatchDirectory can alter what is your default printer on the fly.

In order to have the report come out of a local printer attached to the server, it MUST be printed to a file, and then directed to a printer using a CLIENT-BASED application set to watch for the print job. There is no way any user, other than one sitting at that server, could direct the report to print on a printer attached to the server, other than the way I described.

(Unless someone knows different of course.)

Just curious, why are you wanting to do this?

I am assuming it is because you have users of your web app that work in an office and they would like to use the application off site to print a report to the office's printer. If that is correct, then I have an easier solution for you. Just use Logmein, the free version will work fine. Login to your server with logmein - I would actually rather log in to a workstation if you have one. But in either case, just use logmein to log in to one of your computers that has access to the printer you want to print to. Then, within logmein, start your application in the browser. Now, all your local printers will be available.

            Gary,

I deal with accounting types of applications and lets say a customer or salesman places an order over night. Warehouse gets in say 5am and needs print tickets when the salesman/customer places the order the warehouse gets an automatic pick ticket. We do not need human intervention, e.g. someone going in and saying, oh print pick tickets, the warehouse is just that, a warehouse, just a printer no computers. etc.......

Plus have many 24/7 operations that have just low level works doing packing, filling, creating etc... no need to complicate them - here is the paper that says do this no brain power types.......

Re: Print a report on web server printer?

Here are a couple products that do this:

              watchDirectory - http://www.watchdirectory.net/wdhelp...PDF_files.html

              AutoPrint - http://www.freedownloadscenter.com/U...Print_Pro.html

Both are the same concept. You cause your report PDF to go to a folder. Set up a folder for each printer. Assign the printer to each folder. The watch program will instantly print the report to the printer assigned to that folder.

If you want your reports to get generated automatically at odd hours, you need watchDirectory anyway to kick off the report without a human involved.

Re: Print a report on web server printer?

report.print() works for me. I didn't test extensively, but with a basic a5w that first did a report.printer_override() to select the printer and the report.print(), the printer that my server had access to was printing out reports from an A5W page.
