Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Peter -

True I don't have a form in the second example. I took that out to be able to just get the basic data down.

Maybe I'm not communicating well. The issue I'm having is on the data entry side - the lookup from the service table (svc_lookup1) and filling into the 'items' table.
Not the output from the line items table once the data is filled in.

Once the data is in the lineitems table in a [1:M] relationship I wont have a problem outputting the invoice the way I wanted to in a report.

Will this get you a bit closer?

I've added CustArea to the Items table and the Browse.

CustArea has an Event attached to it now. The event checks the Type and Pricelevel, finds the appropriate records in svc_lookup1 and fills in the Item_no, Description, and Price.

          Hi David,

I see that you have made the conditional lookups work from price_level field in the browse. No disrespect but you cant expect a user to select Residential or Commercial on every line item. I think this should be taking the value from the customer type. Which would mean using a variable as part of the Condition.

How would you do this on a form?

            Nice video Gabe,

It would also be nice if you were to show how you made lookup work.

Is this a conditional lookup or a filtered lookup?

              Hey Keith,

I'm just working from the browse that Scott put together. Easy enough to change once the form is in place. Scott's conditional lookup's also use PriceLevel so might as well continue the process that's in place.

                  Hey Keith,

Why easier said than done? Qualify the reference with the tablename. Scott used a reference to his Browse columns so I'm guessing he's ok with that... since he did it. If he wants to change that reference to a form, then he's going to be working with a set - as his original sample - so qualify the reference with the table name. The event code is also then changed easily to reference the the form name. Easily done actually.

I'm having a thick day today, I have no idea what you are talking about. As I understand it Scott want to have lookups to either Domestic or Commercial Prices and an auto price for the area where a service is used. I think Gabe has come up with a good demonstration with his video. Now let us see how the trick was done.

                      Hey Keith,

Maybe I'm the one who's having an off day. I took Scott's latest sample database, where he is using a browse, and provided a way to get done what he needed: Product Fixed Cost, Service Fixed Cost, Service Variable cost based on area. May not be the best way, but it's not too bad and when he uses this browse in a form he can implement the same solution by using direct reference to the form's objects he's going to use.

Gabe's solution was excellent... unfortunately I'm having trouble with my video to code translater... got to get that thing fixed.

                        Re: Complex conditional lookup

                        Hi guys -

Back at it this morning. Boy you all were sure busy last night, looks like I have a lot to study.

Keith - You are spot on in your statement regarding user input of the account type and product. I did the table that way so that I could get the lookup working. Any time you can reduce human error the better. I have intentions that the customer table would supply the area and account type.

Right or wrong, when ever I am having issues I just break things down to the most basic components then add back in functionality.

From the conversations it sounds like I may not be attacking this in a 'commonly accepted' method or manner. If anyone has a different approach I'm all ears!

BTW G. Gabriel - I thought it was 'George' I'm sorry if I have the name wrong. I just looked at the video and that is pretty slick. I would love to know how this was accomplished.

Now off to look what the others have done. I'll be back.......

                        Thanks again,

                        Scott

Gabe, very jealously guards his work. He lets us know that it "can" work, but he doesn't want others "stealing" his code.

                            Not exactly...
The video offers clues for those who are looking..
Secondly, Iam waiting for someone to look at that set and pinpoint that mortal sin I referred to earlier..Any takers?

                            Want just the easy answers?
OK.. I will post the example but let me tell you, there is nothing fancy about it or anything out of the ordinary, nothing that any one can figure out on their own.

                            What's it going to be?

I've looked at this probably 60-70 times. The big thing I see that I haven't been doing is expressly saving the record between moving to the child record (lineitem) entry.

Secondly, I am waiting for someone to look at that set and pinpoint that mortal sin I referred to earlier..Any takers?

The big thing I saw when you first pointed it out would be that each line item can only have one product. Thus the correct link would be 1:1 not 1:M
                              Correct??

                              Want just the easy answers?
Nope! I'm hear to learn. Sometimes I need a gentle nudge in the right direction. (ok maybe a rough shove ;))
