Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Row merging in Grid

    If you only need to display the data, then I have a solution. If you need it to be updateable, then this won't work.

    Screen1 shows the method I'm going to describe. It is a list of RealEstate Agencies with the member Realtors listed next to it. The advantage of this method is that it allows a variable number of realtors.

    The first column is the Agency. This column is a custom field created like the example in the Web samples Alpha provides: definition is:

    Code:
    function Name_render as c (data as p, args as p, PageVars as p)
    with PageVars
    on error goto Name_xbasicError
    Name_render = remove_blank_lines("<span style=\"font-size: 11pt;font-weight: bold;\" ><a href=\"agency_listings.a5w?session.AgencyId="+Data.Agency_id+"\">"+alltrim(Data.Name)+"</a></span>"+crlf()+alltrim(Data.Location)+crlf()+alltrim(Data.Adr1)+crlf()+alltrim(Data.Adr2)+crlf()+alltrim(Data.City)+", "+alltrim(Data.State)+" [EMAIL="%22+alltrim(Data.Zip)+crlf()+transform(Data.Phone1,%22@R"]"+alltrim(Data.Zip)+crlf()+transform(Data.Phone1,"@R[/EMAIL] (999) 999-9999")+crlf()+"<a href=\""+Data.Calcwebsite+"\">"+Data.Calcwebsite+"</a>")
    Name_render = stritran(Name_render, crlf(),"<br />")
    end
    Name_xbasicError:
    Name_render = "Error in custom control xbasic: " + error_text_get()
    end with
    end function
    The other columns are calculated fields created on the Query tab using table.external_record_content_get() <-Working on the web, you'll use this function a lot! Here's one example:

    Code:

    calcPhone   = table.external_record_content_get("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\Realtors.dbf","phone","lastname+firstname","Agency_id="+quote(agency_id))
    The field itself is just set up as a label.

      Re: Row merging in Grid

      Why not just set the rid to a View rather than a table (in the Query(DBF)) section of the grid. It will let you treat the data like a set.

        Pete,

        A view is an excellent idea, except that I couldn't figure out how to get this kind of display out of a view.

        Views are 1:1 and this is 1:many, so it wold have to be done "upside down" then sorted for the dispay, and it got too complicated for me.
