Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Drop Down Box Filter

    Hi

At the moment i have button on my form for every different year of records, that when pushed activates the "run custom query" action.

But instead off having a different button for every year i want to filter, i would prefer to get rid of the buttons and have a dropdown box that consists of every year, and when particular year is selected in the box, it should have the same effect as when i pushed the button.

Please can someone hekp me with setting up a drop down box to accomplish this?

    Thank You
    Cliff

      Re: Drop Down Box Filter

      Thank u Gaby.

      That works perfect.

Would i be able to change it so that instead of it filtering from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, that it takes the record from the 1 August of one year to the 31st of july of the next. The records i am displaying are records for horse racing seasons, and the season works runs from begin of august to end of july.
So the entry would be something like 97/98 or 1997/1998 and that would mean records from aug 97 to july 98 inclusive.

      Thanks

Here is a small addition using a combo box for selection....but for some reason I am unable to limit the combo entries to unique values---and am out of time for the day so hopefully someone else can get it to work as it should.

Thank you Mike and Gaby for your solutions.

Is there any way on either of the solutions to have an option that lets us see all the records, eg would it be possible on gaby solution when it ask for parameters to type in the word "all", and let it show all the records? Or on Mikes solution, is it possible to have the word "all" in the dropdown box, where it will display all the records? And obviously it would be great if on mikes solution it didnt show duplicate values in the drop down box.

                Re: Drop Down Box Filter

                Had a few minutes.

To get the drop down to only show unique values (may be a bug), I populated it by expression.

I have it so that if you either choose 0 for the year from the dropdown or by pressing the small button next to the dropdown, it will show all records. You can apply the concept to how Gaby did this as well.

Please tell me is there some sort of code that after pushing the "all " button on the side, and then going back to the filter, that the filter dropdown box defaults to the "0"? It does this when i have restarted alpha five, but not once i am already in the program.

                    Thanks

                      Cliff,
I'm uncertain as to what your question is truthfully.

The only code I have is I believe Topparent.show_all() in the OnChange event of the Combo box when the condition of the variable =0, and also on the OnPush event of the button. I have not placed anything to make anything a default as you suggest. You could do this if wanted on the OnInit of the form or whenever you would want the default value to come into play.

                        Hi Mike

How would i show in the drop down box the multiple season date like 2007/2008?
                        I would think the formula would be (var->xyear + "/" + (var->xyear+1).
But where would i put this formula to show up as text in the box?

                          Re: Drop Down Box Filter

                          Cliff,

Here is what you want I believe.
                          Code:
                          table.external_record_content_get("datatable","if(year(Transacdate)<>0,year(Transacdate)+chr(92)+eval(\"year(Transacdate)+1\"),0)","year(Transacdate)","unique_key_value()")
But I am going to leave it up to you to figure out where it goes...I think you need to check out the help files regarding combo boxes, form events and such as I do not think we are helping you learn, but instead are just handing you code that is not understood.

The filter also has to be changed to accommodate this.....but the pc I have the work on is having fits currently and may not get to fixing that tonight.

Back--here is the filter fix...again leaving where to place it for you. I had to make the variable a character for this to work as 2005/2006 is a character value and not numeric as it was for the other combo boxes. So a new character session variable called svDt_char has to be created for the form.
                          Code:
                          if(Var->svDt_char<>"0",Between(Transacdate,  Date_Value(val(word(svDt_char,1,"/")),8,1), Date_Value(val(word(svDt_char,1,"/"))+1,7,31)),.T.)

Post back with any success/failure to accomplish this--I'll check back tomorrow evening.

                            Thanks Mike.

                            Yay i did it:)

Thats great, sometimes we just need a hint.

It works great, just 1 or 2 bugs i am battling to iron out.
                            1. When the program starts it works fine, but as soon as do one filter and go back into the drop down then the 0 has dissapeared (sometimes it only happens once i have put in a new entry into the database and then try and filter).

                            2. If the first records are before the month of august then it only gives u an option to filter from the next season, for instance u will see the first 3 entries can not be filtered, although it should show 1996/1997 on the filter.

The last thing which if it is possible to do is that every time i go into all, and come back to the season filter, it shows the last place u left off, where i would like it to revert back to 0.

Appreciate whatever info u can give me to help.

                              Hi Cliff,
Glad you were able to figure it out!

Just a short note before leaving for the day...

                              1. One blank date must be maintained to have the "0" appear...so long as that is done I don't have a problem with it (now that it is character, we probably could use "All" BTW).

                              2. I will have to check out your new sample to see what is happening as I cannot reproduce it with the sample I currently have. This would be later this evening unless someone else needs to play!
