Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Create multiple records from one record

    I have a table called MASTER_T with a form called MasterForm and a table call SUB_T . Both Tables have almost the same field structure.
    Is it possible to have a button in the MasterForm to create 3 equal records in the SUB table with the information of that record? The ID field will not be transferred. Just 2 key fields called accNo and NameID.

    Hi Jack,

    Welcome to Alpha.

    I think we need more info on exactly what you are trying to do, as what you have requested does not compute.

      Re: Create multiple records from one record

      Mr. Hubert, Thanks for reading my post.
      I need to create 3 records from MasterForm in a table called Sub_t.
      Say, I am in Record 26 of MasterFOrm and I want to click a button in that record that will create 3 duplicate records in Table sub_t and all 3 records will receive the information of 2 fields in that 26th record of MasterFOrm.
      Sort of
      assign k = 1
      For or while K < 4
      Do create record in table sub_t
      accNo = master_T accno
      NameId = Master_t Nameid
      k= k + 1
      next
      I have the concept, but not the syntax.

        Jack, here's a simple example. If you have experience with other languages I recommend you purchase Dr. Wayne's Xbasic for Everyone book. It will get you going quicker than anything else I know, assuming you have a bit of programming experience going in.

          Thanks. The sample was exactly what I needed.
          I did see the other 3 samples of yours in the archive codes in passing value.
          Very valuable samples for the new user.
          Thanks again.

            Hi Jack,

            I'm intrigued as to how you are going to use this code in your application?

            I am surprised that you think you need to have data duplicated into another table, rather then using the tables in a Set. I would be interested to learn more.

              Variation on theme Re: Create multiple records

              Jack -

              Pardon me for jumping in I hope you don't mind! I saw this post and it is something I've been trying to accomplish too.

              If you open the form_og you can see the stuff I've been playing with.

              Tom -

              Thanks for this!! It gave me a place to start.

              The "Create 'n' records" button works fine (need error handling though).

              The other button that calls a 'Dialog Form' isn't so hot.
              I am having some problems with variable scope. I have a case select worked out that I'd like to drop in to add the records from each of the values of the variables (vc_rnd_x where _x is 1-5) on the RndSelect Form but I can't get the values to pass through to the routine you set up.

              Code:
              'get desired field values, store in vars
              dim vc_inv_num as C
              dim vn_sales_tax as N
              dim GLOBAL vc_rnd1 as c
              dim GLOBAL vc_rnd2 as c
              dim GLOBAL vc_rnd3 as c
              dim GLOBAL vc_rnd4 as c
              dim GLOBAL vc_rnd5 as c
              dim vc_Round as c
              'Displays a message box (style:'OK Button', image: 'Information symbol', id: 'msg3').
              DIM SHARED  msg4_result as N
              DIM SHARED  msg4_OK_Button as L
              msg3_OK_Button = .F.
              title_var = ""
              'Message is an expression. Need to evaluate the expression in the context of the current form.
              message_text_var = a5_eval_expression("=\"vc_rnd1 = \" + Vc_rnd1.value + '    ' + \"vc_rnd2 = \" + Vc_rnd2.value + '    ' + \"vc_rnd4 = \" + Vc_rnd3.value + '    ' + \"vc_rnd4 = \" + Vc_rnd4.value + '    ' + \"vc_rnd5 = \" + Vc_rnd5.value",local_variables())
              msg4_result=ui_msg_box(title_var,message_text_var,UI_OK+ UI_FIRST_BUTTON_DEFAULT+ UI_INFORMATION_SYMBOL)

              msgbox("Create records for each round","Create records in table 'Inv_sub' for each Round, passing field values to each new record.")
              'get pointer to the primary table supporting form1
              t = table.current()

              vc_inv_num = t.invoice_nu
              vn_sales_tax = t.sales_tax

              'open the target table
              t2 = table.open("inv_sub") 'in multi-user setting add error checking in case open fails
              'dim x as N
              'x = 1
              select
                  case vc_rnd1 = "Active"
                      vc_Round = "Round 1"
                    t2.enter_begin()  'begin new record
                   t2.invoice_nu = vc_inv_num 'assign field values

                t2.Round = vc_Round
                t2.Status = vc_rnd1
                t2.enter_end(.t.)  'commit the new record

                  case vc_rnd2 = "Active"
                      vc_Round = "Round 2"
                    t2.enter_begin()  'begin new record
                   t2.invoice_nu = vc_inv_num 'assign field values
                t2.sales_tax = vn_sales_tax
                t2.Round = vc_Round
                t2.Status = vc_rnd2
                t2.enter_end(.t.)  'commit the new record
                  case vc_rnd3 = "Active"
                      vc_Round = "Round 3"
                    t2.enter_begin()  'begin new record
                   t2.invoice_nu = vc_inv_num 'assign field values
                t2.sales_tax = vn_sales_tax
                t2.Round = vc_Round
                t2.Status = vc_rnd3
                t2.enter_end(.t.)  'commit the new record

                  case vc_rnd4 = "Active"
                      vc_Round = "Round 4"
                    t2.enter_begin()  'begin new record
                   t2.invoice_nu = vc_inv_num 'assign field values
                t2.sales_tax = vn_sales_tax
                t2.Round = vc_Round
                t2.Status = vc_rnd4
                t2.enter_end(.t.)  'commit the new record
                  case vc_rnd5 = "Active"
                      vc_Round = "Round 5"
                    t2.enter_begin()  'begin new record
                   t2.invoice_nu = vc_inv_num 'assign field values
                t2.sales_tax = vn_sales_tax
                t2.Round = vc_Round
                t2.Status = vc_rnd5
                t2.enter_end(.t.)  'commit the new record

              end select
              Also if you pull up the form by its self the on change works great but when you pull up the rndselect using the button on the form_og the on change doesn't work (for me) until I click on one of the other values.
              (hope that was clear)

              Maybe some one can see where I'm going wrong.

              Thanks again Jack and Tom!

              Scott
