Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: duplicate records in query

    More details needed.

Where are you encountering this? on a report? on a form?

What is the table position in your set design from which the duplicate records are coming? a parent table? a one to one child table? a one to many child table?

Which table or combination of tables are you filtering in your query? the parent? a one to one child? a one to many child?

Experience has taught me that the fastest way to get help here is to post a zipped copy of the database (using dummy data) and instructions for us to follow to trigger / see the problem.

Duplicate (repeating) field values is often a result of the normal display of composite records. This is the likely cause of what you are seeing, but can't say for sure without much more information from you. A sample to work with would permit virtually immediate, specific, assistance.

      Re: duplicate records in query

One tip is to view the default browse for the set. If you see "duplicate" records there it is generally due to the nature of a one to many set. The method used to suppress the display of the duplicates depends on the type of layout you are using.

if i delete all records, the zip file is 23 meg and I don't know how to make it smaller but I have a set with a tabbed form that has a button to run a report of past due customers. I have a set with customers as parent and a problem table associated with one to many. For every entry into problem table the customer will show up on the late report. If i have a customers with thre problems, they show up three times

You have to pack the table after deleting to physically remove them. If you remove all the records we won't be able to see the issue.

You might also want to perform a Database Compact.

          Compacting the Database

When designing forms and reports, the size of the data dictionaries, the DDD and SET files, grows over time as you continue to make edits to the objects in your database. It is a good practice to periodically remove the extra bulk by compacting the database.

The Compact Database command packs all tables and compresses the data dictionary files. You can check the size of the database before and after compacting to see the file size reduction. You can also select to compact the database when you back it up.

          To compact a database:

          Open the Control Panel.

Close all Forms, Operations, and any dialog that may have a table open. Alpha Five cannot perform a compact operation on tables with open Forms.

Select File > Database Compact. Alpha Five completes the Compact Database Operation.

          Code:
If i have a customers with thre problems, they show up three times
This is what I would want to happen. What do you want?

Take a look at Designing Reports for Sets with one to many links.

As suspected this seems more and more like a problem with your handling of the composite records in your report. There's a useful section in the User's Guide called "Designing Reports for Sets with One-to-Many Links". Recommmended. You will find that the solution involves inserting a group break, probably on your customer id field. Then placement of fields from the customer table in the group header band; and placement of fields from the linked child table in the group details band.

                Re: duplicate records in query

See "cutoff 3 month" report, which I"ve modified. Unzip the attachment to an empty folder to avoid overwriting your own work.

Your problem is one of misunderstanding the concepts of a "composite table" and "composite records". Review the User Guide section previously recommended to you. Holler again if you have questions.

Which report might this be? Lots of reports, none named this.
