Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I only copied part of the list... for both cases there is not a trailing semi-colon at the end of the list. The cases that work start and end with a ", the ones that don't, do not have a quote mark at the beginning or end.

In your pdf, for those instances, there is something strange appearing on the left

      2 HONORS
      Grade: 10
      Ž•
      2 HONORS
      Grade: 11
      5•
      2 HONORS
      Grade: 12
      Ÿ•

Probably need to examine those records for strange characters.

Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

When I run it in the Interactive window I see the names such as below, just there are no quotation marks.

When I run the function in the report I see the symbols.

This is from the Interactive Window:
        Anatra, Jonathan;Armitage, Jennie;Beaudoin, Shaina;Bellows, Spencer;Benoit, David;Black, Samuel ... list continues (NO QUOTES)

        This is from the report:

I can't think of anything else to suggest without looking at the actual database.

Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

Here are some things to try:

            1. Try running the report without a filter and see what happens.
            Code:
            strtran(table.external_record_content_get("studentpassive","alltrim(lastname)+', '+ alltrim(firstname)","",""),crlf(),"; ")
            2. Try using crlf_to_comma() instead of strtran() with filter and see what happens:
            Code:
            crlf_to_comma(table.external_record_content_get("studentpassive","alltrim(lastname)+', '+ alltrim(firstname)","","hrlevel ="+hrlevel+ " .and. grade = "+quote(grade)))
            3. Try using crlf_to_comma() instead of strtran() without filter and see what happens:
            Code:
            crlf_to_comma(table.external_record_content_get("studentpassive","alltrim(lastname)+', '+ alltrim(firstname)","",""))
            4. Try standing on your head leaning against the wall and count to 1 million and see what happens.

            5. zip a copy of the database to the message board and see what happens.

Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

I have tried all the options, including standing on my head!'

I have attached copy of the database along with the reports. The table names are bit different then what we have been coding as they were passive tables. Try each of the reports and you will see that the honor roll level for each grade displays fine as a list. The report HRSummary for Paper2 is the report that generates a problem. For some strange reason, now that I have made the copy it still doesn't work, but now shows grade 10 at HRlevel 2.

              I appreciate any help.

I am beginning to think this may be a little "bug?"

Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

When the length of the list of names for a particular grade/honors level exceeds 1024 characters the calculated field is having trouble.

                Grade 10 Honors 2 = 1359 characters
                Grade 12 Honors 2 = 1027 characters

Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

                    David,
I found the same results. I don't see this on the specifications as a limit but it probably is because I tried this in version 6 through version 9 and it generates the same issue. So it is probably not a bug. If you report it, they will respond and let you know. Also, this will alert them that they need to add this to the specifications documentation.

Although not the greatest of work arounds, because it comes out looking bad, you could make two calculated fields which splits the list by adding an additional item to the filter.
                    Code:
                    "hrlevel ="+hrlevel+" .and. Student_Grade = "+quote(Student_Grade)+" .and. Student_Lastname < \"M\"")
                    and
                    Code:
                    "hrlevel ="+hrlevel+" .and. Student_Grade = "+quote(Student_Grade)+" .and. Student_Lastname >= \"M\"")
And oh yes...please tell Mike Wilson that he needs to get his grades up!

Re: Report Data in Paragraph Form

I got this response from Selwyn:
instead of dragging your calc field directly onto the report, put a
Rich Text Object on the report and size it correctly. The put the
calc field in the Rich Text Object.

                          that will work.
