Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Short Time calculation

    I have three fields:
    Distance (numeric) Example: 21.6 (miles)
    Time_Duration (Short time) Example: 1:30:00
Pace (numeric) calculated using the previous fields data. Example: 14.4 (MPH)

    Pace = time / distance

Is there a formula to convert the time to a decimal for this calculation?
    Any other suggestions?
    thanks,
    FF

Instead of a short time field, which is only a time on the clock, you may need to use another field type to store the elapsed time. Maybe a numeric field will work..

My thoughts exactly. However, to calculate 'time / distance', time it has to be converted to a decimal.

For example, 30 minutes is half an hour because 30/60 = 1/2. Furthermore, 1 divided by 2 is 0.5, the decimal value.

50 minutes is 50/60 of an hour and 50 divided by 60 is .833333...

      Am I missing something here?
      thanks,

        Dirk,

Like it or not, you're going to have to do some math here.

The minutes will need to be converted to decimal : MM/60 and added to the hours. If there are seconds, they must be treated like minutes and added as parts of minutes: ss/60

        from your example 01:30:00

        1 hour (easy enough) = 1
        +
        30 minutes / 60 = 0.50
        +
        00 seconds / 60 / 100 = 0.0000 (divide by 100 to place it after the minutes)

        resulting in 1.5000

That should give you your pace.

        Distance / time (in decimal)

I would imagine that you would need to do some sort of rounding else things could get a little crazy, but it should work for you.:)

          Re: Short Time calculation

          ( ( ( Hours * 60 ) + minutes) * 60 ) + seconds ) = (lapsed time) in seconds

(Distance traveled) in miles divided by (lapsed time) in seconds gives you (miles per second)

(miles per second) * 3600 gives you miles per hour

          or

          Code:
          ( (Distance / ( ( ( Hours * 60 ) + minutes) * 60 ) + seconds) ) * 3600

Wouldn't it be easier to just use the time function TOSECONDS() ?

Understood. What I'm looking for is help with extracting the different parts of the Time field data, for the calculation.. ie 00 = ss, 30 = mm , 01 = hh. Once I can extract the specific units, ss,mm,hh., I can put them into the needed calculations.

                CShortTime()

The CShortTime() function converts a short time value into a character value that can be used in a sort expression.
You can also parse the result and retrieve the individual parts you want.
                There can be only one.

Looks like I can get what I need with this CShortTime().

Thanks to all of you for your assistance.
