Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mike,

Do a search for "Windows 7" and include the quotes in the search and you should find a few threads that have already discussed the issues and includes a response from Alpha that was passed along by one of the users.

            Sandy,
Not understanding....the webpage you linked to states that Alpha version 8 is compatible with Windows Vista (check out the "page info" by right clicking)....and it is. Nothing about Alpha v9 or v10 or Windows 7.

Does Microsoft say if you try out Windows 7 RC not to load the OS software on your office or home PC! It's unstable and fully untested. If your undertaking serious Alpha Application work are you sure you want to use Windows 7.

Whew. I thought I'd never find how I got to that link, but it's at the bottom of
                http://www.microsoft.com/windows/com...ity/windows-7/
And V8 does work find in Win7 without the OS version warning.

The trick about beta testing is to use your primary machine so the OS gets a real workout, but never use your only machine. Yes, it's untested until the beta crew gets to testing.

If you have Norton Ghost, you can make an image copy to an external hd or a 2nd partition and then restore after testing.

Windows 7 accepts all versions of Alpha 5 simply by setting the alpha5.exe program in compatibility mode as follows.Click on alpha5.exe from C:\Program Files\A5V8. Click on Properties from the drop down menu. From the alpha5 properties window, click on compatibility tab, then check the Run this program in compatibility mode for. Click on Apply then OK. Restart and you can now enter your registration key.
I am running Windows 7 Build 7260 RTM and A5 runs just great.

                    Lots of luck

if you are running 4.5/5/6/7 I wonder if this is true

I install in the root directory so I never use program files as a way around vista, etc.

Maybe I got carried away. Let me clarify. I have A5 V8 and it works in compatibility mode in Windows 7 Build 7260 RTM.Most programs will work when it is in that mode.

We always use C:\A5Vn with n for the version. It makes updating others' systems much easier.

Xp SP3 compatibility and Administrator modes got through a couple of errors, but this one is always left.

Is RTM different from RC? 7100 is the last we have.

                            Sandy,
RTM is Microsoft final Release To Manufacturers for in this case Windows 7 that is about to be released. There is another release after RTM 7260 which I think is RTM 7264. However, I am not concerned about the releases closer to the actual releases to the public. Windows 7 Build 7260 that I am testing and using is really a great Operating system in my opinion. I have never encountered any problems installing all of the Alpha versions I have over the years except with Windows Vista and now Windows 7. But I know that you need to set the executable program into compatibility mode before Window 7 will accept Alpha 5 to be licensed. It has to be run as in Windows XP. A tip is that you should take the time to restart the system as often as you can after you make any changes then go ahead and try the program.

Do you suppose it matters I'm installing the A5V8 runtime? Didn't want to spend a license on a beta system.
