Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Windows 7

No, I don't think it matters if the beta license you are referring to is A5. Remember, you are trying to activate an A5 license in Windows 7 and the O/S needs to know if the program is allowed within the system. One point I neglected to mention is that the User Account Control (UAC) allowing program acceptance may need to be modified. When I installed Windows 7 on my computer I turned UAC completely off before I installed any programs.. This is not a safe practice if you do not know what you're doing but in Windows 7 Microsoft has made it lenient enough to make allowances. If you need more info about UAC go to Google and question them.

      Re: Windows 7

I mean that I am installing an Alpha 5 v8 runtime application on a Windows 7 beta operating system. The full Alpha 5 v8 license covers two machines, my XP home machine and XP laptop. I didn't feel like buying another A5v8 for Microsoft's benefit.

UAC generally announces itself. There was no such black screen, so I don't think UAC was involved.

I am not familiar with A5 runtime applications and its affect on two different computers. The A5 license requires a computer name for each individual computer. If you're connected on two computers via network, I don't think you can install A5 on two computers with the same computer name.

          Re: Windows 7

The runtime installs without a key, so it can be installed on as many machines as one wishes. There's a limit to how many can be connected to each other and running at the same time, but I have only one running on Windows 7 when the error shows up.

The same situation works just fine installing the runtime application on Vista instead of Win7.

I work at Microsoft and have had Alpha5 V10 BETA running on WIN7 and W2K8 without any problems.

              A5v10 on which Win 7?

On the Win 7 there was a message that I probably could have gotten rid of by fiddling permissions. But this is A5v8 Runtime on Win 7 RC.

Has anyone tried any A5 runtime on Win 7 RTM?

Alpha Five v4.5 will not run in Windows 7 using the compatibility mode feature, even though it worked in Windows Vista. We've done tests and searches and can not come up with a cure.

It won't run and says "Alpha Five has stopped working". The error report (in case it means more to anyone else than it does to me) states...

                        Hi Martin,

Yes we have tried V4.5 in both the root and program files, in fact since Vista appeared I have avoided Program Files completely.

                            Michael,
Have you right clicked your Alpha 4.5 exe program in Windows 7, checked Troubleshoot compatibility to see if Windows 7 can help you there. Also have you looked in Google to find out what causes Appcrash problems?

another idea, based on the error code, would be to get a list from the 4.5 exe folder of all dlls, and register them - it could be that there is a confilct there

                                Re: Windows 7

Bruno - the 'Troubleshoot Compatibility' option essentially just runs the program in the different compatibility modes, I have tried them all and none of them work. I could not find anything relevant to this problem on Google.

Martin - I tried registering all the controls but get another error message (see attached). So I don't think any of them register.

Aplologies I know this isn't the v4.5 message board but as this topic got started I thought I'd continue the thread because not as much action on the v4.5 board.
