Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Allow User to Create their own Reports

    Hi All,

Here is my sample for users of V8 Runtime Plus or V9 Runtime to allow a user to create their own Reports/Letters/Labels.

This is my first attempt at this and while it works, it it quite a simple set up and all comments to improve the method would be welcome.

    Hi Keith,

Started tp play with it, and looks pretty cool. The only thing that was a little confusing was the "new layout". The "Edit Layout" worked fine, but nothing happens on the "New Layout" button. Ryland

I tried this but keep getting an error message everytime I load the program or press a button. I reloaded again and still get the same. I am using A5V9. The popup window says Script:UI_MODELESS_DLG_BOX:@=a5_window_bar_title line:40 windows=A5_window_list() Aun unhandled exception was generated.

Will this work in v11? If so, can you briefly explain or post a capabilities summary?

Re: Allow User to Create their own Reports

                Kieth,

First, what you have created looks great.

My question; it appears to me that the end user will now have access to the control panel.
In my apps, I prevent the end user from getting to the control panel.

I very much like giving the user the ability to create on his own, but only if the end user cannot get to the control panel.

                What do you think?

                  Hi Ron,

Thanks for the complement. The code is from the Runtime documentation.

When implemented the user would not get to the CP.

Re: Allow User to Create their own Reports

                    Hi Kieth,

Further testing does indeed confirm that the user can be locked out of the control panel.

Now I have two more questions for anyone out there:

The user can create a new or edit an existing layout. How can the user delete a layout that they created?

If the user creates their own custom reports, what happens if I send an upgrade patch? It seems to me that
my upgrade will wipe out their reports as their reports are saved in the same ddd that is part of the application.

Re: Allow User to Create their own Reports

I was intrigued with Kieths post as I felt I could possibly use this solution in one of my applications. So I took what Kieth gave us and I refined it into a mini application to see if this would suit my needs.

I started by reviewing the runtime documentation, pages 12 thru 19.

I decided to store MY (the applications) layouts in the function named SystemLayouts(). This would be hard coded and password protected. I use the script, Custom_Exclude_List to generate a file with the list, then copy and paste the list into the function. I felt that this would be a more simple way to manage the list and would not have to deal with a file to be included with the application.

I customized the Label Editor, Letter Editor and Report Editor toolbars save and save as, page 15 under protecting system reports. I created the function CustomLayoutSave with the aurgument being either Save or Saveas.

All remaining coding is handled by the form, CustomReports. So to add this feature to an application, include the following:

Table Mainmenu with one field and no records
                        Form CustomReports
                        Script Custom_Exclude_List
                        Function CustomLayoutSave
                        Function SystemLayouts

The results have been promising, but I do have one issue. When I open the CustomReports form, the Select Layout to Edit/Print list contains both the user generated reports as well as my system reports. Im using this code:

                        sortsubstr(a5.report_enum(2), crlf() )

What I want to do is to run this code and subtract from the results any layouts found in the SystemLayouts function or something to that effect.

                        Thanks,

                        Ron

                          Hi Ron,

Looks very neat. Just an observations.

I did not see any where apart from the code tab, where to create the Exclude list. The other thing you need to do is create a custom toolbar for the report in edit mode. This is where you control how the report is saved and to prevent writing over a restricted report.
