Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Testing webapps

    Hi all,

I am new to alpha five and i am facing this problem i hope someone can help me with ...

I have developed a webapp (a5wcomponents + a5w pages) that works just fine when i publish and test it in the local webroot. However when i try it on the application server i get errors like "dbf file not found".

The server is in the other building and i have to physically transfer the app to the server everytime i make a change to test it out.

So i was wondering if i could test the application with the desktop alpha five to see how it would behave on an application server ? someone told me that the platinum edition lets you run an application server for 30 minutes ??

    thank you,
    ankit

    Re: Testing webapps

There is no timer on the local app server that comes with Alpha Platinum. It runs forever, but only allows your one local connection, not multiple connections from different computers. So it is for testing as you say. Whoever told you that was thinking about session lifetime, which is on all web app servers.

You must transfer published files to your server. You cannot transfer files out of your Alpha project location to the server. So you can publish to your local webroot, and then transfer those files to the server. You need to take pains to ensure you transfer all updated files each time you do this.

One more important point: Normally you publish from your project location to the server. When you publish, your database location can be defined at run time or at publish time. Here is what some code might look like under each condition (this is xbasic code, but your Grids operate the same way):

    RUN TIME
    tablecount("[PathAlias.ADB_Path]\developers.dbf","id="+quote(devid))

    PUBLISH TIME
    tablecount("C:\_masters\A5V9\myproject\developers.dbf","id="+quote(devid))

If you choose run time, then the alias ([PathAlias.ADB_Path]) is resolved each time the user refreshes their page. The value for the alias is sitting in a file named a5_application.a5i.

The relevant portion of the a5_application.a5i looks like this:

    Dim _aliases_ as c
    _aliases_ = <<%txt%
    [PathAlias.ADB_Path]|C:\_masters\A5V9\myproject
    %txt%

So, to get back to your question, the data path on the files you carried to the server are probably pointing to the wrong location. The best way to fix is for you to set your system to resolve alias at run time and then MANUALLY edit the a5_application.a5i on your server to reflect the true location of the data on that server. You set the alias resolution to run time as follows:

Edit > Settings > System > Preferences > Web Publishing > Alias Resolution.

The alternative is to recreate the same path environment on your local computer that you have on the server, normally more difficult.

The server included in Alpha Five allows unlimited local connections without a license for an unlimited time. This allows a developer to test locally before publishing to a production server.

Additionally, both the server in Alpha Five and the stand-alone Application Server include a demo mode which lets them service remote requests for 30 minutes after startup. After 30 minutes, all requests will get an error page stating that the demo time limit has been exceeded and a license must be purchased.

This demo mode is intended specifically for the type of scenario mentioned - testing an application on a remote server before purchasing a license for deployment.

<<30 minutes>> Must have missed that in the release notes, unless it has been around for a long time.

I think it's been in V9 since the original release and was actually added in V8, but I can't remember the exact timing.

            Hi Lenny,

thank you for clearing that up. My next question is then how do i simulate my problem on my local machine ? do i create a new publishing profile as i would have done on the real server ?

            thanks,
