Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Print Custom Help to .pdf

    All --

We have developed an application that uses the A5 custom help file (custom help in form properties). It has about 8 different chapters, and each chapter has about 5 topics. Topic displayed depends on where you are in the application, and it works great.

We have been asked to print the custom help screens to a .pdf file. Is there a way to do this?

Re: Print Custom Help to .pdf

    Hi Richard,

I have just looked in the custom help of AlphaSports, there is a print option in there.

This should allow you to print each chapter and sub topics in turn.

If you start from the Main Menu you will have the option to print this topic only or this topic and all sub topics.

As to create a pdf from the help file, cant help with that. If you can both view on screen and print hard copy why the pdf?

      Keith --

Thanks for your quick response. If I could print it, that would be fine because I could print to a .pdf driver.

However, the Alpha Sports help file is a compiled Windows help file. I created my help file using the Alpha Five (built-in) Help File. It does not appear to provide the print option. I wonder if there is an easy way to convert it?

          Stan --

Thanks for the suggestion, but it isn't a .chm file.

A5 puts the chapter & topic headings in a .dbf file, and it puts the text in a .fpt file. Eg. a5_applicationname_help.dbf and a5_applicationname.fpt. I can't see these files in the list of tables & sets.

I'm not sure what is the best approach here.

If I look in the AlphaSports sample database directory I see A_AlphaSports_Help.dbf, etc. No, the dbf isn't listed in the controlpanel, yes, it can be added like any other table. (And a report constructed.)

Re: Print Custom Help to .pdf

I just created a one topic help file for a form to try this out... works quite well.

So... now... because the built-in Alpha 5 help system creates a DBF file to hold it's information, attach the table to your database, write a report based on the help table. Preview and then output to PDF.

Yikes... it's nice when this stuff works so easily.

Aha! That is the solution. Add the table & create a report. Already tried it, and it seems to work fine. As usual, the rest of you are a step ahead of me. Thanks everyone!
