Will someone test this in V9?

I created a browse for the table attached, set the order expression to invert of the dates field, saved it with the name

    Default Browse for Dates

When I right click on the table name in the control panel and choose Open Default Browse, I believe Alpha is opening my saved browse. Not really a solution for the issue because with any table name longer than five characters you can't save the browse with

    Default Browse for xxxxxx

    Too many characters.
    There can be only one.

It should be noted that this behavior is not limited to a default browse. If you open any browse or form (default or otherwise), and you have not previously defined the index (or filter from a query), the table will show the records in record-number order.

Once again, this is NOT consistent with previous versions.

You are correct that the default browse is the saved browse and the order holds to the order set

    Code:
    invert(cdate(Dates))
when it is opened in V9.

CA and Bill, please submit something to Alpha. I have said on several occasions that I can't believe that this hasn't caused problems for many more people whether they use the default browse to open a table or have an embedded browse on a form. Maybe they don't know it's screwing them up.

In my reply to Mr. Rabins (Sewlyn), I mentioned that I wasn't sure why after almost 20 years, people are confused by the indexing behavior.

I still think that there's some script that could be added to the browseEditor.xml if that's the correct file that loads with Alpha.

This issue is akin to what they did somewhere around V4. They got rid of the "go to page" feature in the report previewer. This subsequently got fixed but caused a lot of consternation if you had a 100 page report and wanted to look at page 75 and print it.

Alpha is not alone. When Vista came out, Microsoft did a few stupid things. For instance, if you have more than one cd/dvd drive, in earlier versions of windows you could set the properties for each one individually in regards to automatically running an inserted disk or simply have the system show the contents. Now, they both have to be the same. Other software companies do the same thing. It's like they don't really know how people actually use the software.

Interesting. It would seem that it shouldn't be allowed to name a saved browse with the name Alpha uses for the default browse.

That's strange. I downloaded Stan's zip file and extracted it. The files are there when looking via Explorer but when I open either V8 or V9, the files aren't visible. If I try to open the .adb file using V9, I get the unexpected format error. Vista won't let me add V8 to the list of files to "open with".

    Robert

When I downloaded Stan's zip it contained only a dbf file, no forms and one saved browse.

When you use V9 to open the database, change the file type in the field to .dbf and it should show the one table Dates. Alpha will then create an .alb file based on that "database for dates.alb"

When I extract the zip, there are 8 files including the.dbf and the dictionaries. There is no .adb file. You're suggestion worked.

By the way, Bill has opened a new thread on this issue.

Well I thought I had a problem not being able to select an index and it being used until another one was selected (don't like record no index), like in A5V4 that I upgraded from. Seems it's an A5V9 problem, even though from what I have read on this thread, Alpha don't seem to think so. Well, I for one think they are wrong. I am glad I only paid $89 for it. Back to V4

    Garry,

    I confess I haven't read this thread carefully. If I have time tomorrow, I will. But, honestly, A5 v9 is ...L - I - G - H - T......Y - E - A - R - S... head and shoulders beyond v4. Actually, even ancient version 5 is at least 1 or 2 light years ahead of version 4. Do reconsider. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Peter, you have to consider the source. What I really know about Alpha5, you probably could put on a match book cover. The data base I built several years ago to keep records on sales and repairs of appliances and tv's is pretty simple. I thought I would upgrade and I would have what I was used to plus a lot more. V9 does have a lot more to offer but I miss the comfort of the things I'm used to. I guess I'm getting old and set in my ways.

No problem. Change can be challenging, if not difficult, for sure - esp. if you are basically satisfied with what you have.

Hey Peter, now that I've got your ear and you're an alphaholic, got an unrelated question. I have been working changing my database to use V9 tonight. Think I might be able to live with the index problem, however, I put a print record button on my print invoice form and when it prints, it shoots out 3 blank sheets of paper then prints a nice pretty invoice. Any thoughts?

The first thing I would do is go to report properties/page/overflow data, and select "trim (do not print) overflow data". See if that fixes it. If not, it may be related to your set structure, assuming the report is based upon a set.

BTW: It's always better to start a new thread for each now topic. Better chance of getting more responses from people.

Another tip is to try this message board's search feature. Try

    blank pages

    as a search term.

Thanks for the feedback. I found that I can get it to print only the invoice and not shoot out 3 blank pages first by selecting (PRINT PAGE) which already has 1 in the option box instead of keeping the default (ALL) when my printer box comes up. Where can you find just rudimentary or beginner information about Alpha5. Such as Do's and Don't's like DO use certain length nameing conventions or Don't (which I found out the hard way) delete a table without first removing all references to it in forms and browes. How to move just the data from say v4 database to a v9 database if an item had been added to a table in the v9 version and what is the difference between delete table and drop table. Which should you use and when. This type of information should be put together somewhere in one place.
Like I said I am definetly a beginnner.
