Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    3rd Party Ajax Calendar/Scheduler Challenge

The topic of incorporating a interactive calendar/scheduler into our Alpha web pages has been a reoccurring topic on this forum for a long time and several individuals have made valiant efforts to create such an app. However this has been a difficult issue - especially with V9 and lower and if you were not a high level programmer. But if one were to search the internet for Ajax Calendars or Schedulers, you would find a lot of very well written apps already built for this purpose but you need to know how to interface these with Alpha.

Now with V10 and its wonderful Ajax and JavaScript built in, I am wondering if someone out there who is experienced with V10, Ajax and/or JavaScript would be willing to build an addin (for profit even) to take an application like DHX Scheduler (for example at http://www.dhtmlx.com/docs/products/...er/index.shtml) or some other such product which sells for under $200 and build or create the necessary steps to bridge Alpha with one of these 3rd party products?

In my case, I need to add a scheduler to my existing Alpha web site that will graphically display surgical times and show conflicts. The fields that would need to link to these are basic such as start time, end time, date, event category, and a doctors & patients name (with a SQL backend and running within a SSL window). But I know from past discussions that this example could be used with many different developments that many of your have as the concepts are the same and basic.

So I thought I would throw out a challenge to see if anyone is up this. I could see a real market for an individual who could create that bridge as there are hundreds of other Ajax apps that are out there that could be very useful and I would think are now available to us as Alpha developers with V10!

If nothing else I hope this stimulates some great discussion and/or other ideas along this line. Thanks!

    great discussion
Wow the DHTMLX scheduler is very slick, I also could do with something like that.
While I haven't seen much of v10, I don't think it could provide an easier AJAX approach than v10.
My bet is it would be easier to create something new rather than to adapt.

There is certainly a lot of interest from users to have drag and drop functionality in a calendar both for desktop and for web applications. Clients expect this sort of functionality. I could have used this in several applications I have built during the last 2 years. As these libraries already exist, surely Alpha will soon realise that it is something they must incorporate within Alpha Five.

Re: 3rd Party Ajax Calendar/Scheduler Challenge

        Over the past couple of months I have been re-writing my existing app in beta V10 and it is truly amazing with many new mind blowing features but there are a couple of points here that I am trying to get across;

One, creating an app like this scheduler in Alpha would not be so easy as I am sure there is a lot of complied code behind that scheduler with many man years of development - plus this app exists now and is supported by that company with future developments most likely - we just need to learn how to make that bridge.

Two, because we now have true Ajax and JavaScript built into Alpha V10 the foundation is now present to open up a whole new world to us with existing small and large 3rd party apps that have not reasonably been available to us in the past.

I would imagine (an hoping) with this new capability of V10 all that is lacking for individuals like myself who knows very little of Ajax/JavaScript programming is just learning a few of the methods to link up to the outside world, which is why I am throwing out this challenge. I am very excited with the possibilities I am seeing in V10!

While the link below is not a pre-made drop in.....I remembered this from awhile back and thought I would post here just for reference in case it might help others. I agree....to create a universal plug in in Alpha with this functionality would take many hours to complete.

BTW, the DHTML calendar provided in the previous link is very impressive - thanks for sharing. While I am not heavy into the web side, it would seem to reason that it should not be too hard to incorporate this dhtml calendar into an Alpha app.

              Mauricio,
Very interesting flash calendar - is this actively linked to your alpha database?
Can you enter data from either the calendar and/or your database and have it automatically reflected in the other?
If so please provide a bit more details. Thanks!

Re: 3rd Party Ajax Calendar/Scheduler Challenge

I have an editable grid for events in my application once someone adds a new record to the grid the calendar will reflect the new data,
this is done by converting the table data into XML format (wich is a normal text file with an specific format [blob]).

So you have a calendar for viewing events and a grid for Adding/editing Events

A cool feature is that you can filter events on the calendar based on their category and place without having to reload data

the application is feeded from 3 xml files:
                  1. Events.xml (basic info for all your events)
                  2. Legend.xml (info for categories, places, and other leyends)
                  3. Styles.xml (Font styles colors and other stuff)

Im my case file 1 and 2 are dynamic (based on info from a table) file 3 is static

Dont know were or how this add-on was created nor do the source code is provided by the vendor.

*It would be great if Alpha could make an strategic alliance with this company (like they did with simplecharts) and provide the code to make the xml from a predefined table.
                  Cheers

Im seeing a bussiness oportunity here
will someone be interested in buying an alpha app that will fill this schedule and in which events can be added/edited trough a grid?

(the events could have a link to the filtered grid for editing that specific event so this would be transparent for the user)

All this for $49.99 USD ;)
                      Cheers

                        Mauricio,

Now that is what I am talking about - I was hoping someone would see it as a business opportunity and run with it.

Yes, I would like to take you up on your offer to be shown how to interface this. I am re-writing my app in V10 with a SQL back-end but everything is based on grids so I would "assume" it would work. Let me know what the next step is: my email is [email protected].

Let me adapt the code I all ready have for a more general porpoise app, translate everything to english and ill get back to you (2 weeks maybe because ill have to work on my 'free time' with this)

Notice: You will still have to buy the flash calendar plugin directly from the vendor

Start - end. Yep thats how I have it applied in my current code
