Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Could not open or create multi-user-information file

I just moved to a new computer, activated Alpha Five version 5, but the other licensed computer is getting the could not open-muf message.

The database file was moved directly to the new computer via cable. The sharing settings for the file are correct. Still no luck!

I had already looked there. The data was moved directly via cable and was not copied by through a CD etc. I have checked the properties and the file is set to share.

        1. Make sure the directory has the proper permissions to allow you have full control over the files within it.

        2. With Alpha closed, delete the .muf file and let Alpha create an new one when you open Alpha.

Thanks for the suggestions. The directory is correctly set to share. I closed Alpha, deleted the .muf file, reopened, and the same problem exists on the 2nd computer. Just to make sure, I deleted it again. No change!

Simple sharing may not grant the other computer the necessary rights to create/modify files on the host machine. Open the directory where the database resides, right click on the background of the folder, choose Properties, Security tab.

I went beyond simple sharing and worked through the security tabs to allow full control to the directory. The same error exists.

How many licenses do you have? You are allowed to use 1 copy of Alpha5 on 2 computers, provided they are not using the data concurrently. If you have 2 machines sharing a database on a network, then you need to have 2 separate licenses.

We have 2 licenses, one on each computer. One computer, the host computer was replaced with a new computer this week. We activated Alpha on the new/replacement. Data opens on the new computer but is not accessible on the shared machine. Very frustrating. Day 5 of not being able to get at the data!

Re: Could not open or create multi-user-information file

Is the replacement computer running the same operating system as the old machine? Is file sharing handled the same? It certainly appears that there is something dramatically different between old and new.

One computer has XP Home Edition 2002 service pack; the new one has XP Professional.

The only two data files that cannot be accessed by the shared computer are Alpha Five and Quickbooks. WordPerfect,Excel, Word etc all open fine on the shared computer so it's not a system wide lock out, just selective files.

When on the "client" machine, can you access the Alpha folder on the "Host" machine using Windows Explorer?

Re: Could not open or create multi-user-information file

The client machine can maneuver to the Alpha folder on the Host machine via Explorer. As it can in Alpha but when we try to open on the client, we get the 'could not open or create' error message.

The client machine can open many other files on the host, but not Alpha or Quickbooks files.

Is the XP Home Edition machine the host of the Alpha data or is the XP Pro hosting the data?

I have much better luck with the XP Pro hosting the database......
