Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Where is best place for A5 DB files ?

I've recently installed a fresh copy of v9 on a new computer and will soon be starting a new A5 project. I've noticed that by default, A5 would normally store my new database files on the C:/ root. I had a mess of files with my old setup on my old computer and now that I'm starting over, I'd like some advice from experienced A5 users on good folder/file organization schemes. I intend to upgrade from v9 desktop to v10 application server eventually. I'm a little concerned about locating all the relevant files when I'm ready to distribute my final application.
Any suggestions for me, please? Thanks!

    Jim:
I put a folder on my root drive for alpha and then an application folder and then all of the files in that folder

    c:\alpha5v9\Payroll
All of the payroll files are in payroll

    c:\alpha5v9\Billing
All of the billing files are in the billing folder

Depends on many things. You might get as many answers as there are users on this message board.

In my opinion, the two most important things are (1) to NOT put them in the root folder of any drive and (2) keep each application in a separate folder. I guess 2a would be to keep each application in one folder unless you are absolutely convinced that you will never have to move it or install it to a different folder.

Personally, I prefer to keep my programs completely separate from my applications (which includes, of course, the data). My computers all have a separate drive for Programs and Data/Applications. That way I can back up my data by just backing up everything on the one drive.

And, since I work on many applications for many people in many versions of A5, they are organized first by A5 version then by company then multiple subfolders. For example:

      D:\A5v9\SomeCompany

      with the following subfolders:

      App (and App/Bkups)
      Install_files
      Demos
Files_from_SomeCompany (could be anything - instructions, requests, data, etc.)
      Files_to_SomeCompany
      Last_prod
Info_logic (where I keep records of significant/complex logic)

I put each application in a seperate folder and a server(if there is one) in a seperate folder.

My application like upslog has a server like c:\upslogsv9 and the shadow is c:\upslogv9. I put my runtime in the same folder as the shadow. Most do it different than I do though. It just makes it easier when I distribute my app.

If it is a stand alone, the application and the runtime will be in somethiing like c:\payrollv9 or c:\csupportv9. Again, it just makes it easier for me to make an install for someone.
