Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Pick from a list

I need to create two tables.
table A will hold equipment with model numbers with standard options (basic model).
table B has components that can be added to the basic equipment model to be customized.
I want to open table A select a standard model then opend table B to see a list of components that I can add to the basic model enter quantity of the options on table B and then make it a part of the basic unit of only the items from the list of options that have have selected.
    Please help...

    Re: Pick from a list

Not clear I understand you fully.

If the "basic unit" is to include a record in Table A, and other records "copied" from Table B, then you should define a set containing Table A as Parent, and a second table, (C) as a one to many child. In the field rules for the C table define a filtered table lookup field rule that uses Table B as source. The filter in the field rule lookup will limit the range of possible components to those which correspond to the model number in the pending parent table record.

      Re: Pick from a list

Tom: thanks for your response. What I want to do is when an item from table A is selected, to be able to look at the options available for that item in table B. Then I would like to be able to select the quantities I want of each of the options on table B and add these selections to table A.
For example I have 5 different widgets named model 1,2,3,4,5. These widgets as standard come with a white light bulb. In the options (options will be different for each of the 5 models) I want to list options such as blue light bulb, red light bulb, green light bulb, etc. Then when I select a widget with its basic feature and price I can open table B and add lets say 2 blue light bulbs and a 1 green light bulb.

Analagous to beginning an invoice, choosing a "parent" item, beginning a new invoice item line, looking up by part number/name only those items related to the "parent" invoiced item?

The options would have to have some field value to link to the parent.
        There can be only one.

Stan: Thanks, that is the direcction this is going, but I just don not want to pick one line item at a time as in a lookup table, I want to be able to pick one or many of the options available and click a button and add those to the invoice.

Here's where it gets tough. You can create an xdialog with a multi-select list box (whatever it's called) and pick one or more items at a single time. However, you then have to parse the results using xbasic to get the discrete values and save them to your table. If you are comfortable w. xbasic you will be able to do this. If not, maybe somebody else has an easier solution.

              Oscar,
Attached are a couple of ways I tend to do this. There are descriptions in the example.

Mike: This is very close to what I am looking (set form method). I was expecting to enter quantities instead of a Plus/minus sign. The show selection part is not working, and I do not know enough x basic or script to understand or modified, could you check the show selection again?

                Thanks

The show selection part is not working
Works here. By giving focus in the browse above the show selection part and clicking on the +/- an "x" appears to show that the record has been selected....once however many records are chosen, just press the "Show selections" button and they will appear.

                  BTW, Nice examples Mike.

                    Hi Oscar,
You could add a default quantity field in your part list table which the user could change, as well as a button like Mike W used for selecting the items to use. Then the button could copy the selected item to your component table. It would depend on whether a default quantity would work or not, otherwise the user would still have 2 steps. A similar button could placed in the component table to remove items entered in error. I was messing with Mike's form and screwed it up or I would post what my idea was. ;) As soon as I figure out how to add the button on an embedded browse in a new form, I will post it...

Mike C also has an example for moving items from one list to another - don't cha Mike?

I do have an example I believe you created for me quite some time ago --I will look for it if anyone wants to see it.
