Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    check box - list box: Default values

    Am using the script genie to create an xdialog box to handle a check box - list box to be able to pick multiple choices. Am wanting to get the list box to display as checked what has already been selected and saved in a table field. The table field is character 100. I save what is selected using a crlf() list. The Choices are from another table to populate the list box. I can get the value of the table field into a variable (vCurrChoices), but can't figure out how to get them checked. Have also looked at ui_get_check2() trying it's default value, but guess that doesn't work either.
    Have read most of the posts on this subject, but nothing has helped so far. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    The attachment "orig_preferences.png" is what I'm looking for. I can cancel out and nothing is changed. But it always opens up with nothing checked.
    Thanks.

    Re: check box - list box: Default values

    I am not sure what you truly want but the following takes the result variable from a checkbox called mychecked and then stores the results into another variable to show you that the first was a list

    mychecked is a variable list of checkboxes which gets stored with a list of only those items checked

    Dim IDs as c
    debug(1)

    for each foo in mychecked
    if IDs = "" then

    IDs = quote(foo)
    else
    IDs = IDs + quote(foo)

    end if
    next

    Now as you go through the loop above you would neeed to populate the particular fields in the records. I am not sure you can make C field with multiple results like you want. I think you may need to have one field for each result

      Re: check box - list box: Default values

      Thanks for the reply, Mark. What I'm after is this. I have entered a record where I've chosen one or more of five, or however many I might have, choices in a check box - list box. I can do this. Now if I go back to that record and need to change this field, i.e. add another choice or change choices, when I open up the check box - list box, I would like it to show those previous choices checked so I don't have to re-check them or try to remember which ones were checked. The default field in the genie doesn't seem to work with check boxes. I've placed in that field "Private Room" and it doesn't get checked. I've typed in other choices in that field and it doesn't do anything different. So, I'm assuming it has no bearing on the check box - list box type control. Hopefully somebody has figured out a way to write a script that does this. It doesn't seem too far fetched to me, but maybe there is a better way to handle it.

        Re: check box - list box: Default values

        Ernie,
        I've been waiting for more info or a sample from you and now you have confused me. Your initial post made it sound like you had the values in a table that were marked and simply wanted the checkboxes in the xdialog to show that.....now it seems that you want to have the xdialog to remember what was checked for the next time you open it. They very well could be the same things if---you are marking table values in some way from the xdialog---if so then one solution. If, OTOH, you are not doing this but are wanting the xdialog to remember what is checked during a single session of Alpha, then another solution.

        Which is it (or is it something else entirely!)? Am already guessed out! :) Spoiled by having users give samples I think....like most, I prefer to go the easy route which a sample does for giving specific solutions.

          Re: check box - list box: Default values

          Mike,
          The xdialog is built using values from a table. I have a form based on another table that has a character field into which I store the values/choices I make from the xdialog. When I open my form, select a record to edit in which I have previously entered values from the xdialog into that character field (see first attachment from my first post), when the xdialog opens, I would like it to show those previous selections I made as being checked, as is reflected in the 3rd attachment above. This is how I would like it to be displayed when editing a record. As it is now, when I open the xdialog, nothing is checked, which is to be expected when entering values into the field the first time. I would like it to act just as you would expect when tabbing into a normal text field. It doesn't delete what was there for you to re-type it or enter something else. Does this make sense???

          Later: Found that if I choose the Mult-Select List Box it behaves like I want it to. However, the UI isn't as clear as it is with checkboxes.
