Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic in the new V10

Is the need to know Xbasic in depth in the new version as much as it it in V9?
Are there new additions to simplified/overcome the lack of knowledge of xbasic?

    Mike,

Tough question to answer. I know very lttle xbasic and have written several apps using action scription. I 1st got into using the web stuff in V10 and have done no coding (no html, no xbasic) and have built useful apps for our intranet.

Many posts on the board concentrate on xbasic (which I guess once you know and speak it is easier to come up with a solution) but that said, there is not much that I needed to do that could not be done without xbasic. I am learning slowly but surely and it does make Alpha so much MORE powerful. I guess it really depends on what you are trying to accomplish.

I have not yet seen the additions to V10 (first hand) for the desktop, so I can't give an opinion on how much more you can do without coding. BUT the addition of using the grid component on the desktop is a huge plus. (no coding)

The simple answer is yes, with each addition to action script it is cutting down the amount of xbasic you need to know. There are 4 new xDialog styles, these could be done before by way of coding but all you need to do now is push a few buttons and in some cases know some filter syntax. These are great and could have saved me a lot of time if they had been in version 9!

Looking behind some of it though shows a lot of new xbasic commands which are once again not documented yet and do not populate the autohelp when you type them, therefore a lot of trial and error is needed to use them. Lets hope the new wiki help works!

        Hi Bill:
I am very interested in leaning how to build simple web apps (for intranet only, not for publishing on the Internet). Where do I start? Would the material in the V9 help file titled "Web Publishing" and the book "Web applications Made Easy" by Susan Bush relevant or is it something else?
        Thanks

          Yes. Also:

Take a good look at all the V10 videos. That is where I picked up everything I used to build my apps. I do have"Web applications Made Easy", but have not read or referred to it yet. V10 seems like a much different animal than prior versions. I am sure others will attest to that. What type of app are you looking to deploy?

I would not call Invoicing, quotations and payments the simplest apps to start with but you will need to dive in and watch the V10 videos, hopefully there will be some new books pertaining to V10 coming out soon.

I just built a fairly complex customer relationship management (CRM) system for the desktop containing Order Entry, Quotes, Point-of-Sale and Accounts Receivables. I did it 95% with Action Scripting. I am amazed that I was able to do this although it required a lot of thought about the design. The OE and AR are very complex code wise, yet simple systems to operate.

I have about 50 reports in the system, and about 55 Forms.

All in all this is a powerful development environment.
