Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Report page numbering and group page breaks not working

I've searched the forum and have not found any discussion on two problems I'm having. I have the latest build of V8.

I created a database with tables, reports etc. long ago in V4.5 and they were working fine. I haven't printed out any of the reports since converting to A8. Yesterday, I tried to open and print one specific report and encountered a strange error message that I couldn't work around so I created a new report from scratch.

Two problems occur on the report.

One is that the system field PageXofY works fine until the page count reaches 100. At that point the "of Y" part only shows the first two numerals of the total pages. I have expanded the size of the field to two inches which is at least an inch wider than necessary but to no avail.

Secondly, I have a field (called Art) in the table which is a substring of one of the other fields and I group on it. It is nothing more than the alphabet-A-Z. I also put a page break in the group footer. This worked fine in V4.5. After I printed the report, I noticed that a new page wasn't created when Art changed from W to Y.

I went back to the design of the report and deleted the grouping and then re-did it. Now the page break doesn't occur when Art changes from Y to Z.

I have packed the table and done a large number of other things to try to zero in on the second problem but to no avail. This same grouping works on other reports for this same table.

I have attached a dummied down database with the table and report for anyone who wants to look at it.

Another issue that doesn't affect the above is that, in the real database, table and report, I have a summary calculated field in the report footer. This works but the report footer doesn't occur on it's own page. I always thought it did.

The size of the field is half of the problem, the display format width is the other half.

    There can be only one.

Nope, might have happened by accident but report footers are not designed to print on a separate page any more than report headers are.

Do you have the group set to start on new column/page, as appropriate?

          Stan- thanks for your help.

Since the page numbering field is a built in Alpha tool, I never thought I'd have to change it's properties. I just went with the default. I also thought by manually changing the size of the field while in the report design, that would do the same thing. I changed the display format width to 15 and it solved that problem.

On the second issue, I didn't have "start each group on a new page" checked. However, it was breaking properly without this checked until it got to the end. I have other reports that break properly without this checked. Don't know why it works.

On the down side, when I check "start each group on a new page", I'm getting a blank page between when a group ends and a new group starts. I'm going to have to work on that one. Okay, I'm stumped.

okay, as I mentioned in my last post, I haven't figured out why I'm getting the blank pages just because I specified that each group would start on a new page. I tried this with another report related to a different table and the same thing happened.

            Anyone have any ideas?

Strange behavior but I've figured it out. I had tried different settings yesterday and even tried the settings today that I had tried yesterday. for some reason, having "keep group on the same page" checked was giving me the extra pages. It wasn't necessary to have this checked but I can't figure out why checking it would give me extra pages.
