Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ASP.NET Access

    Hello there,

Does anyone know how to access an Alpha5 database from a web application - specifically with asp.net?

    thanks,
    dave

    Re: ASP.NET Access

.dbf files should be accessible with an ODBC driver from most systems... but why bother with ASP.Net if you have all that web power available in Alpha5 anyway???? That would be a waste!

      Re: ASP.NET Access

I have had some success using the new VisualFoxPro drivers, and then the dbase stuff works in what seems to me to be a clunky fashion. So far as I know there is not a proprietary ODBC or OLEDB driver for the A5 database structure. There are others who a really quite experienced with A5 and may have other suggestions or correct what I just said.

A5 is reported to be a great web dev platform, but to me the show stopper issue on A5 web dev is the need for their web server application to be installed on the host. Not always something readily done. Given the wide spread use of Apache and IIS, it would have nice to have the web dev piece run in those environments without adding a proprietary app. Still they are not alone in using this kind model, for example Crystal Reports does a similar thing with their report application server and with the way the reports are deployed to the web.

My interest in A5 is desktop dev and reporting writing so this is not a problem for my use.

Sorry I could not be of better help.
      Regards,

      John W.

        Re: ASP.NET Access

        Hi there,

Thanks for the replies. I need to use .NET because I need to link info from Alpha5 into a currently existing e-commerce website.

I'm know very little about Alpha 5 itself - I'll download the trial version and see if I can connect into it using OBDC.

Any other pointers would be very helpful at this stage.

        Yours,
        Dave

          Dave,

My guess is it would be easier, quicker, more cost effective and efficient to re-write the .NET app from scratch in Alpha!

            I agree there...

However if that is not an option, then just get a copy of the dbf files you need to access, and use the VisualFox Pro ODBC drivers, you won't need Alpha5 to just access a DBF file.

              ok guys,

thanks for the help here - rewriting the web app isn't an option - I only need to query 1 table in Alpha 5. i'll give the FoxPro one a try.

              thanks again.
