Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

"X" - Code to Ask Are You Sure

Hi,

My client keeps closing his windows and getting confused on the Windows close by pressing the "X" on the toolbat. Is there a generic routine that I can place thu the application to ask "Do You Want to Exit" instead of the auto close of the window ??

Thanks,

Ryland

Alpha has provided a script name similar to autoexec it is called candatabaseclose. It fires anytime you try to close the application.

You can create a script with a message box asking your user if they really want to close the application.

Here is what I use on my Warehouse Management application

Code:
DIM GLOBAL r1_result as N

title_var = "Program Exit ?"
message_text_var = <<%text%
Do you want to exit the program?
%text%
r1_result=ui_msg_box(title_var,message_text_var,UI_YES_NO+ UI_FIRST_BUTTON_DEFAULT+ UI_QUESTION_SYMBOL)

if r1_result= 7 then
cancel()
else
a5.close()
end if
Everytime you push a button that will close the application or the Big Red X, the candatabaseclose will fire and ask if you really want to do that.

You can code it to do whatever you want to do.

Ryland,

A different way in my apps. There is no "X" in the upper right hand corner. The only way they can close is by a method I give them. Well, they could shut off the computer or something LOL

Re: "X" - Code to Ask Are You Sure

There was an error in the code I posted, it should read

Code:
DIM GLOBAL r1_result as N

title_var = "Program Exit ?"
message_text_var = <<%text%
Do you want to exit the program?
%text%
r1_result=ui_msg_box(title_var,message_text_var,UI_YES_NO+ UI_FIRST_BUTTON_DEFAULT+ UI_QUESTION_SYMBOL)

[COLOR="Red"]if r1_result= 7 then
cancel()
end if[/COLOR]
The code in red in the changed code - in my application you would have been directed to a logging out routine and then close. In this case there is no need for A5.close() since if you don't cancel the closure by selecting no the program will then close.

Sorry for the error

Tom,

I noticed that the "X" carries the same value as a "Close Form". What I really wnat to do is just not have them hit the X, but still allow them to close a form so that they could proceed to the previous menu.....does that make sense ?? Ryland

Thanks Bob and Tom,

This is the code that I used to disable from that thread:

DIM code as C
code = <<%code%
CANCEL()
%code%
can_database_exit(code)

I liked Tom's example as well, but I will have to re-work my form closes in order to use it directly.

Put this code in the CanExit Event of the form:
Code:
ui_dlg_box("Exit",<<%dlg%
Do you wish to close this form?;
<Yes><No>;%dlg%,<<%code%
if a_dlg_button="yes"
parentform.close()
else
cancel()
end if
%code%)
