Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    ONACTIVATE Event

    Hi,

I did not notice this challenge until I loaded up my inventory with 1000 records in the product file. I have have an intermediaery Menu That stays open all day once the user logs in. On the Menu, there is an ONACTIVATE on the form that runs 5 scripts every time it is being called. Actually, I would like to set a switch to limit within the onactivate when those scripts need to be run. There are only a few forms that I when I close them and run the onactivate that I would like them to execute. How can I exclude the onactivate from running from only certain forms that I need?? Ryland

    Try explaining again, Roland.

How can I exclude the onactivate from running from only certain forms that I need??
    An event doesn't run forms.

If you only need to run the five scripts once a day, use an ontimer event.
    There can be only one.

      Re: ONACTIVATE Event

Yeah, I'm probably using this incorrectly. What I had was that everytime a form was open, there is an onactivate event that runs in the form being called. In this case, it is one of the middle management menu's. These five routines that exist whenever this form gets called on the onactivate only need to run once a day, i.e. when the client logs on and signs into that middle management menu.

The on-timer i assume would work, but how will it know its to be run/activated only one time when the user logs into that particular menu to run those scripts?? Ryland

Suggests to me that you need to (when the user logs into the menu)

check some place where there is a record of whether the user has logged into the menu yet for the current day (table, text file, registry key, etc)

        if not run the scripts
if so don't run the scripts

record (table, text file, registry key, etc) that the user has run the scripts yet for the current day if they haven't
        There can be only one.

          Re: ONACTIVATE Event

Yes, that is what I need to figure out. Maybe I could set a variable based on that day along with his login info (in a table). Then , if they loggged out and back in, it would see that the routine had already been run within a 24 hr period, and not to execute it again until the next day.

let me work on a few scripts to test this out.

          Thanks,

          Ryland

            Re: ONACTIVATE Event

well setting the variable worked ok, but that just complicated my problems. In this particular form instance, I'm also setting colors to 5 items that are on the same form that I activate. So when it runs the first time, all of the button colors (from the 5 scripts) are set. However, when I leave that middle menu and come back - since I set the variable not to re-run those routines on the on-activate, I lose the colors set on those buttons on that frame...obviously since I close the menu when I run a select another menu item, and re-open it again. Maybe the trick is not to close that form, but just re-display...not sure. I've always closed a window (form) before I ever open another so I do not have multiple windows open, but in this instance, maybe this is an exception...just don 't not know.

              Re: ONACTIVATE Event

I'm not sure I fully understand everything you are trying to achieve but maybe you should look at using the oninit event in addition the onactivate.

Also you could put your various bits of code in a 'if else' routine.

              If variable is true then
              put code here
              else
              put code here
              end if

Then have the code that you want to run every time here.
