Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Web Projects Empty!

Okay, panic time! I opened the web projects control panel and there is no content in any of the folders (a5w pages, html pages, etc.) except "All Files" has 'grid' and 'project' security settings files.

Mystery: The application is running fine. It's been months since any changes. Today we did a number of date base updates.

    Questions:
    1. Can a backup be restored to the Web Projects folders only without losing the data base updates?

    2. Can the Web Projects folders be re-populated from the a5webroot directory?

Breathless but practicing mantras... ;-) Thanks, +/Chuck

Unzip a backup file , copy the web projects folder and replace the existing one with the one in the baCk up

      Re: Web Projects Empty!

I'd start by not focusing on what is visible in the control panel. A simple change in a folder name could render them 'missing' from the CP, but not really gone.

Look for your files using normal Windows file explorer. Maybe you just renamed the project folder. There is nothing you could do while working in Alpha on your project that could possibly cause all files to disappear or be moved.

      Your questions:

1 - Can a backup be restored to the Web Projects folders only without losing the data base updates? Depends on where your data resides. If you are publishing to a remote server then your data is on that server and any tables on your local machine are not really the current data anyway. But if you are publishing to localhost or to your LAN, its likely the table in the Control Panel are live and you don't want to overwrite them with a backup. So you'd want to selectively restore just the web project files if you needed to.

2 - Can the Web Projects folders be re-populated from the a5webroot directory? Absolutely not. They are incompatible. Actually you can get away with it for A5W pages plus some editing, but not component files at all. They will be useless in the project.

        Re: Web Projects Empty!

        Hi Steve,

Thanks for the prompt reply and useful information (as always).

One additional thought I had was that about a month ago I had the hard drive cloned to a replacement drive that had a larger capacity. Is it possible that A5 uses physical addressing that may have been disturbed by this change? I am thinking of switching back to the old drive long enough to get a current backup (in case my new backups are also corrupted).

And thanks, Mauricio. I'm off to look for the zip file.

        All the best, +/Chuck

Did you confirm that the files are missing by opening the projects folder?

            Hi Chad,

No, I did not go there. I did find the web projects folder in the zipped backup file like Mauricio suggested and when I replaced it in the live file everything was back! Thanks, +/Chuck
