Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    placing a browse in letter

I have a table of 180 items called "items." Each has 3 fields: code, description and price. The items are also in a browse called "product." I have a letter that goes out to my clients whose table is called "clients."

I would like to include a printout of the 180 item browse in 3 columns (each column with 60 items) in the body of the letter.

The letter would look something like this:

    The Item Company of Fresno

John Doe 12 Main Street, Yuba City, California

    Dear Mr. Doe.

Below is a list of our products with prices.

    10234 Item1 $2.00 10234 Item61 $2.00 10234 Item121 $2.00
    10234 Item2 $2.00 10234 Item62 $2.80 10234 Item122 $2.00
    10234 Item3 $2.00 10234 Item63 $2.70 10234 Item123 $2.00
    10234 Item4 $2.00 10234 Item64 $2.50 10234 Item124 $2.00
    10234 Item5 $2.00 10234 Item65 $1.00 10234 Item125 $2.00
    10234 Item6 $2.00 10234 Item65 $3.00 10234 Item126 $2.00

    Sincerely,
    The Item Company

I understand how to make a letter. My problem is how to add the product browse to the letter and how to make it put the items in 3 columns.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Harold,

The design of your "letter" very closely resembles a report format, at least to me. Is there some reason you are avoiding a report?

Reports have columns, detail sections, headers, and footers - all of which are lend themselves to the design you want.
    There can be only one.

Re: placing a browse in letter

I do understand the difference of a letter from a report. And I do understand the coluns etc in a report. My problem is how to associate a browser type table as part of a report or letter in which the table is not individualized to the customer. In other words I would like to be able to change our product sheet by changing the items in the product table. The letter or report would, in effect be a personalized brochure with the customer's name and address on the top and the printed 3 column table as part of the body of the letter or report.

First i didn't know how to create a 3 colun list of the products and I didn't see how to make the product table available on the form with the main table being the customer table. There is no way that I can see to embed the information in the product table if the items are not available to embed. Would I have to make the customer and product table a set? If so, how do I relate the 2 tables when 1 really does not relate to the other?

Using the report form I only saw how to create a single column report.

I have attached a word doc file showing what the report (or letter) should look like. Thank you for your help.

In my experience this is done by creating a "catalog"

You start with a customer table, adding a catalog id field.
        You have a products table.

You build a catalog table with a record for each product in each catalog. You probably don't need individualized catalogs for every single customer. Maybe a dozen would do? The catalog table only holds the catalog id and the product id.

You then create a set customer linked to catalog on catalog id linked to products on product id.
        There can be only one.

          Harold

You can create a set with Customer as the parent and the product table as a child. The linking would be 1 to 1 which would make all the products available to every customer. (See thumbnail)

You then create a report based on that set. You would set it up so that the group would be the customer and the detail would be the products. In the detail section you would set it up so that it shows three columns (report - properties-band-detail - region tab - number of columns 3. Then you would place the product ID and the Description in the detail column which when printed would be three columns wide and as many rows as needed for the number of products.. You may have to adjust the font size to accomdate the three colums across.

            Hi Harold,

To answer your question, "how to make it put the items in 3 columns".

See attached screen shot taken from AlphaSports. Take note of the fields in the red box.

I recommend that you build your page first, before you add any fields.
