Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Extra Characters at End of Expression

Help, I'm pulling my hair out!!!

I have a large records management application that was built in V9 some time ago, and had been working fine. Meanwhile I had built some smaller applications in V9-Beta, so once the "end came near" for the beta testing, I purchased V10, flipped on the switch, and now everything is running in V10.

Unfortunately, I didn't have the same smooth transition / success stories of some other users. My main RMS application had nothing but problems in V10, mainly in the area of lookups, which are necessary for users to complete forms. (Rebuilding the lookups in V10 did not work. I always got error messages.)

So I immediately started rebuilding all my RMS components completely in V10, and they were working okay for several days. (They were really flying too. I love the speed of V10.)

Today however, I get a message from a user saying that he can't enter new records into several of the components, (although he can update a record) because the following message appears in white with a large red box around it:

Error inserting record. Error reported was: Extra characters at end of expression

I haven't changed anything on these components, so I don't have the slightest clue as to where to begin to look for the problem.

I'm wondering if anybody else has had similar issues, or could point me in the right direction for trying to resolve it. This is a very important application used "live" by several police departments, and it is now down until I can get this problem fixed.

    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

Re: Extra Characters at End of Expression

This error I believe is with the charcter part of an expression and frequently caused by a missing quote, or double quote, or slash quote.

      a.)
Suggest, Open up the clients source HTML page, Maybe he can email it to you, if you can't reproduce it.
There might be somewhere else that it occurs.
      b.)
Try to nail down the exact time the error occured through your logs,
See if anything is occuring at that time in the error.log
      c.)
Just a guess here. check your table structures on the maybe a field name has become corrupted.,
This would explain the error accross multiple components.

Ron / Colin thanks for responding so quickly.

Ron, I tried the re-publishing, re-booting, etc. route, but that did not solve the problem. (I wish it had.)

Colin, the problem is continuous. I can reproduce it myself by simply trying to enter a new record into the system, and I get the error message immediately, and as you said, across multiple components.

Although I have at least nailed down a common denominator - the components that are getting the error message, all share the same data table, so I'm assuming the problem expression is a field rule expression as opposed to a grid expression, so I'm now looking over all the expressions in that particular table.

Meanwhile, is there any way to perform some sort of a "debug" to see what the problem expression is??

Re: Extra Characters at End of Expression

Nevermind, I took a while, but I figured it out.

I had created a caculated field on each of the problem grids, that was only used to hold a lookup which populated several other fields. I didn't need the "virtual field" to hold any data, but I had checked "updateable" anyway, and I guess the system was trying to enter data into a field that didn't actually exist in the data table.

I have no idea why this didn't cause a problem the first three days it was in operation, but as soon as I removed the calculated fields, the problem disappeared. I've put the calculated fields back on the form, but they are no longer listed as "updateable," and everything seems to be working okay now.

Yes, I can see how that would cause problems.
Feels good to solve the problem though doesn't it Rich. :-)

It's great. It's just the down time that exists between the time the problem is first discovered and time it is corrected that causes the most amount of stress!!

But I gotta say, I love this V10.

What a difference in speed and capabilities!!
