Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Help on Purchase Please

First of all a big hello to all members.

I downloaded the trial v9 a while back and have been playing around with it. I am thinking of purchasing the full version but have some questions first and Im hoping that someone could help me out.

I want to build a couple of programs for desktop use with maybe a couple of hyperlinks to the internet. When finished I would want three of my friends to have and use a copy of them to use on there own desktops. The programs would not be used by more than one user at a time.

Question1. What would the best package be for me?

Question2. If I purchased an Unlimited Distribution License , would I still need to purchase runtimes or run engines extra for the four of us. If so which of the two apply.

Quetion3. I have received an email recently offering me the package below.
    Desktop App Developer's Bundle

EVERYTHING you need to build and deploy an unlimited number of desktop applications to an unlimited number of PCs!
    Alpha Five v9 Platinum edition
Alpha Five v9 Unlimited Distribution License
Alpha Five v9 Total Training DVD Course
    $199
    YOUR PRICE
    Regular price: $997

    Does that sound legit?

Question4. Would I be better waiting for v10?

    Thanks in advance.

In the main your answer lies in your ability to build programs. If you do not have to do much learning then this program offers you a lot for a very cheap price. V9 is available at the moment with unlimited license at a very affordable price. While V10 will offer some enhancements it will probably be considerably dearer and only the real expert users will initially see the advantage of this. So V9 is an affordable as a learner edition with lots of power.

unlimited runtime etc is that you can build and put the DB on any computer you like, it is just that runtime restricts the user to that program, no development is allowed. There are lots of discussions on this form so a search may help you.

Thanks Mark for the quick response.

      Makes Sense.

it is just that runtime restricts the user to program, no development form there.

Am I getting this right? So if I purchased the Unlimited Distribution License. Any database I make can be put on any number of pc’s without purchasing runtime licences and the end user can enter and delete data but cannot edit the database structure.

      Thanks again

No - run time allows you to put the program on multiple PCs and you need the run time license to run them. Those PCs cannot do edits to the program unless they have at least V9 platinum license. So it is truly a deployablable program for a developer. No diffefeernt to creating a program in Visual Basic or similar.

          So all in all
If I purchase this v9 Platinum edition with the Unlimited Distribution License I will still have to purchase 1 runtime licence on top of that for four of us to use any programs I make?

Sorry to be a pain in the behind Mark but funds are limited when its for private use.

            Re: Help on Purchase Please

Sorry - but no again. If you purchase a V9 platinum with the unlimited license then you will be able to create and develop on one pc and then run what ever you create on as many other pc as you like. The runtime license etc is all included in the offers I have seen and they are unrestricted. The deal they currently offer, in my opinion, is unbeatable.

              Re: Help on Purchase Please

When I re read all the posts, I think we are talking the same answer but in danger of confusing the outcome.

              1. To create a program you need a full edition of V9
              2. To distribute you need the full version, plus a runtime license.
              3. Runtime allows you to run on any other machine whatever you create on with the full edition to the limit of the license
              4. Unlimited means just that
              5. The current offers I have seen have unlimited including runtime and run engine

                  Bought it.

See how I get on with it then maybe next year upgrade. But then how far do you go. Different if i was developing for proffit. Maybe Best wait till v11.

Will be looking for future help though, I know it.

Thanks in advance to those who might take me up on it.
