Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    V10 Help Files Not Helpful

I have been trying to work through some tutorials in V10 and find they are using V9 and sometimes V8 screenshots etc. The steps required to do certain things have also changed but we still have instructions for V8 or V9.

This makes it difficult to fully utilise the potential of V10. I have most of the videos that have been put up but still like to refer to a step by step process as in a help file or similar document.

I do realise that the guys and girls at Alpha have been working hard at getting V10 out to the masses and they have produced a fantastic product but it seems a bit incomplete without the so called "users manual".

Does anyone else have an opinion on the V10 help files.

We are working on a full tutorial book that should be available in about a month.

We also are integrating v10 info into our WIKI

Thanks, Richard, for the deadline. I had the same experience walking through the documentation of version 10.

While I fully understand the alure of the newer technologies such as the use of WIKI and Dr.Heller's tutorial (the outline looks great) to strengthen and grow the Web side of Alpha Five, I sincerely hope that Alpha does not forget the V10 desktop side of Alpha Five and the (in my opinion) absolutely necessity for an up to date and accurate Help file.

Murray is correct in that the current Help files are V9 and V8 centric. Having said that, I'm thankful that the software leads the help file. Given the choice, I would rather have the product (V10) and wait for the Help file than the other way around. We also need to keep in mind that updating (or creating Help from scratch) is a labor-intensive exercise and takes a LOT of time and effort. One can only hope that there will be a Help file update in the near term that address V10 features, functions and enhancements.

Hi Dave and "Amen" to that thought.
I'm still a big fan of the desktop capabilities of Alpha.
Hope you are keeping well - its been a while.

                Hi Bob,

Yes, it has been a while.

Every once in a while I get the (scary) feeling that I'll wake up and read that Alpha Software has dropped the desktop side of Alpha Five and gone totally Windows. But then I sober up and all is good again.

If anyone is still bothered by the absence of V10 in the Help file, point your browser to the Alpha Software website and go to the Products page - not a mention of V10!! To a viewer, it looks V9 is the latest version. The only reference to V10 I've found are the message board postings and the e-mails I've been getting.

Maybe the slowness in updating the website is an indication of how long it might take for the Help files to address V10.

                              Richard,

The point I was making in the post re: the Alpha website is this: point your browser to www.alphasoftware.com. Every one of the links under Alpha Five Capabilities address V9 - no mention of V10. In fact, All the links on the page that I clicked address V9. The 'Download a Free Trial' is for V9. etc., etc.

I understand that it takes time and people to incorporate V10 into the Help file and I understand that the Help file supports all version from V5 forward, but one could reasonably assume that 'help' as opposed to 'features' and other 'gee whiz' aspects of V10 will be available when the product ships.

You know as well as I do that when a user is 'playing' with a new product or new version of an existing product, there will be questions and points on which they have questions. I would venture the say that the vast majority of users would, in that situation, turn to the Help file, NOT a list of new features and capabilities.
