Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

        Susan

        Any idea when the V10 books will be available? I'm just getting into A5V10 after dabbling with V9 and I'd love to go through a tutorial for the desktop development side of things.

              Well, here's the status of the desktop book. I'm past the half-way mark. Have totally rewritten and reorganized the exercises. Working hard on increasing the size of the screen shots as users have requested. Still not HUGE, but better, I think.

              I'm still at least 2 weeks out - more likely mid-December. Thanks for your patience.

              Check in any time and I'll be glad to give and update.

                  Re: V10 Help Files Not Helpful

                  Just posted the following on our website.

                  I have good news and bad news. First the good this is going to be the best book ever! Its just about a total rewrite, with larger screen shots and that leads to the bad news. Its taken far longer than I expected.

                  December 8 and time for a reality check. Im about finished, but I can no longer spend every waking moment writing. I have other commitments that have already been postponed too long. Ill continue working, of course, but theres no way it will be done before the first of the year.

                  As soon as I think I have a release date, Ill put it on the website for pre-orders, so keep an eye out.

                  Of course, you can always ask for another update at any time. And keep checking on http://www.libertymanuals.com

                  Hope everyone has a happy holiday season!

                        Re: V10 Help Files Not Helpful

                        Here I sit with v10 on my lap;
                        There's no v10 docs, tutorials or reference manual;
                        What's a guy to do?

                        Fumble around? Explore for more?
                        Sure, if that's all I had to do.

                        But wait, another thought;
                        and suggest enough already;
                        I'll send an email to Richard who offered Dr. Heller's tutorial FREE to the first five;

                        It should be free to all (rather than the first 5) who purchased v10 and got v8 and v9 references. That's only fair cuz we didn't get all we paid for!

                        kenn

                        PS: There's still a lot of reference to v9 instead of v10 on the web site.

                            Hi Richard,

                            I know you are working overtime on this but for me, it's very frustrating. Yes, I can explore etc., but my time is limited and I need to make the most of it. I've watched the videos but they only go so far and having a reference manual to put it all together would be sooooooooo sweet.

                            Thank you for your devotion and the exhaustive amount of time you put into this.

                              thanks for the kind comments ken

                              please email your request for the book to me

                              We have in v10 a potent piece of software for building AJAX web apps and it is causing very serious developers to take notice
                              (see infoworld article this week
                              http://infoworld.com/d/developer-wor...s-090?page=0,1 (2 pages))

                              Yes v10 does take some learning but it is a LOT less learning and much more productive than tools like Ruby, Java, Visual Studio.Net and PHP

                              Ken what kind of Web app are you trying to build

                              (Also we do offer mentoring if you are interested)

                                I'm looking at a system where I can put a fraud referral system on the county's server and workers in 4 counties can go online to make a referral. I will go online to write a report after the investigation. From beginning to end, it will all be done online.

                                But, the county is strapped, no stimulus money here. I bought the WAS and the county will provide the server. There is no money for anything other than what I've put out. Thus, I work on this in the evenings. $1700 training is not on the radar.

                                It would be helpful to read an article which generally describes the process. Not much for details but something to put it all together in a nutshell. How one part comes first, which is next, how all the parts interact. The documentation I've read thus far talks about a lot of specifics but I've not found anything about the overall aproach.
