Firstly, although I have owned A5V9 Platinum and App Server for a long time, I consider myself a 'newbie'!
Wearing many 'hats' in my role I am unable to allocate sufficient time to fully exploring ALL A5V9 features to their full/best.
Now; I have developed an in-house management system - MySQL backend with Perl / HTML /AJAX front-end. I really WANT to use A5V9 or V10 to accelerate further development of this system as, in general terms, I like what I have found so far from 'playing' with A5 AND V10 looks like going a long way further with Codeless AJAX etc.
However, the existing system is lightning fast in terms of searching, displaying, and updating records. I have also built in to current system, record level locking so when a user is viewing the 'detailed view' that record is locked and other users can see who is viewing and when the lock will expire.
I have messed around with A5V9 Platinum both with active-link tables and with web-apps on the app server. Both have great features BUT oh so slow compared to LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, Perl) installation/system.
When viewing a grid browse or form in active-link table - A5 keeps 'fetching' the records (and I have to set to 0 to un-limit the fectch records limit).
I would prefer to develop as web app and there is much that I can do to make the MySQL DB structure and tables more efficient but I am concerned with the the current speed of fetching records. Current users are accustomed to the existing system's speed...
I have read Dr. Peter Wayne's "Adventures In Active Link Land" which is very informative and interesting - I would appreciate any feedback to assist my decision to drop the LAMP and go 100% with A5V9/10 or if MySQL interfacing is a known issue, stick with the LAMP version.
Thoughts / feedback would be appreciated... (It would be especially good to hear from anyone in the UK who has expertise in this area)
