Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    field_blank function not found

Hi: I am using v.9. I have a field set up with field rule data entry set at "not required" It is a simple mask (phone number). When I try to delete the information in the field it comes up "field_blank function not found". This is probably a very simple fix but I can't figure it out. Thanks in advance!

    Re: field_blank function not found

I don't see that problem happening with the Phone field in the Customer table of AlphaSports. Is your field rule set up differently? and... What do you mean "try to delete the information in the field"?

      Hi Tom:

By deleting I mean I want to delete the information in the field and leave it blank. I have other fields that I have the same issue with.

Can you post a sample database here, with instructions for us to follow to find and trigger the behavior?

          Re: field_blank function not found

Hi Tom: I looked through some of the similar threads and found exactly what my problem is. Now I'm afraid to try the solution. The table was originally named sheet1$ (I asssume this was a default name). Another thread answer was to rename the table dropping the $ at the end. I created a test table and tried it both ways and that seems to be the problem.

My new dilemma - I have about 75 reports and forms linked to the table sheet$. If I rename the table do I lose access to all those reports?

Debbie, you should create a good backup just in case.

If you use Alpha to rename the table you should be just fine. The reports should not get lost. If you rename the DBF file outside of Alpha Five, using Windows Explorer for example, you could very well lose the reports.

So, after making the backup, open the Alpha Five control panel; right click on the the table; choose Utilities; choose Rename.

I suspect your table name came across from an Excel import. Excel column and sheet names can hold characters that are illegal in Alpha Five. The dollar sign is one of the illegal characters.

              Re: field_blank function not found

thanks for the confidence. I tried renaming my test table using the Alpha Utilities just to see what happened and a warning came up that items linked to the table might become inaccesible. I'll probably do exactly what you suggested - make a good backup just in case.

thanks so much for your help. As you can tell not everyone that uses Alpha is a "techie"! Sometimes the answers from this forum are so technical that they are hard to understand.

I hope you don't mind helping out a "non techie".
