Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Windows 7

Anyone have any luck running A5V8 on windows 7?

    Re: Windows 7

I can not get version 8 or version 9 to work with Windows 7. I can't believe that the Alpha 5 crew would allow this to happen. I wouldn't even think about version 10 if this is the way they take care of their users.

Try using the Search on the forum for "Windows 7" and you will find many discussions with lots of people talking about v8 and v9 working with Win 7. Kinda makes the last post sound just a little out of line.

I did the search but didn't find anything that would help. Does anyong know if any versions previous to 8 will work with Windows 7?

Did you try the suggestion about using xp compatability mode?
          There can be only one.

Why would an older version work when it was developed prior to windows 7 being a twinkle in Gate's eye?

              Re: Windows 7

Windows 7 Home Premium version does not have the XP compatable mode. I have a hard time believing that all of the older programs such as Photoshop 7 will work but Alpha Five will not. I have an application used by a small museum where someone will eventually donate a computer with Windows 7 as the operating system and the database that I designed for them will no longer work. I would hate to have to go back to Access.

It was no problem at all. I have Windows 7 and A5V8, also. I used Windows Help and Support to find out how to change the compatibility mode for this program. It's very easy to do and A5V8 works like it did on my old XP OS.

Using windows help and support and following the directions fixed the problem of opening with both V8 and V9. However, each time I open the programs I have to allow a change with the User Account Control.

I guess this means you can think about v10 now?

Perhaps. Still wonder why I had this problem only with Alpha Five and no other program (at least 20 or so that I use). Still have not heard from Alpha Five as to why there was a problem. Reading about the prospect of no future patches for V9 makes me a little leary of Alpha Five's support of previous versions.

I have been told but have not confirmed through a secondary source that A5 must be installed on Windows 7 in administrator mode.

A second source has told me that you need to open A5 first and then use A5 to open the database rather than a shortcut placed on the desktop. That makes me suspect the .STARTUP in the shortcut may be the problem.

Both of these sources have told me it works fine once those conditions were met.

                              Donjon,

Can you get support from Microsoft on windows 3.1, windows ME, windows 2000, windows NT. Are you kidding me. Version 10 is where the "WORLD" of IT is going. It is lightning fast and faster even to develop intranet/internet apps. Plus having to just fix a component and publish once not having to worry about all the desktops to deploy is great not to mention can be run by as many users either inside a network or over the internet. That alone is worth the price of admission.

                              Happy New Years.
