Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Windows 7

just tried opening an app in V8 on W7 Ultimate, using xpsp3 compatibility mode and open with adminstrator rights from a shortcut - ran perfectly, including tabbed objects working perfectly.

Just right clicked on the shortcut to set the options.

Morning, can you rephrase your coment for non-IT users.

Can I assume that you can "change" the compatibility in Windows7 by right clicking the desktop icon that starts our app and setting new properties? This would only have to be done once?

What do you mean when you say "xpsp3" compatibility mode????

Thanks for your HELP. It is appreciated!!!!

          But Scott,
That link is for XP Mode.....which is quite a bit different from the compatibility mode so far being referenced here.....It would ensure compatibility and may be needed for certain software, but there is the extra expense of having two OS to consider when using it and IMO the non-virtual way should work for what is being discussed here....but good you brought it up as there has been some confusion as to what's what regarding compatibility and such.

                  Re: Windows 7

Personally, I run Win-7 32-bit and A5V8 without issues as long as I set it to Win-XP service pack 3 compatability (oddly Vista compatability is a no-go)

I have a customer with A5V8 runtime and Win-7 64-bit that's having a problem because the properties of the shortcut does not have the Compatability tab at all. He's verified running as an administrator. Other shortcuts on his desktop do have the Compatability tab. Only A5V8 runtime shortcut and the shortcut to my A5 app don't.

                  Any ideas on A5V8/Win-7 64-bit ?

                  Does A5V10 support Win-7 64-bit in both desktop and run-time versions ?

                    Re: Windows 7

We use Windows 7 for x64 internally for development and testing. So yes, V10 runs fine there. :)

We are running V10 on our Windows Server 2008 64 bit Hyper-V machines with no problem so I don't believe that running on 64 bit is an issue.

                        Martin and Clive,

Just wanted to point out that they were talking about A5V8 not A5V10.

                          Re: Windows 7

Thanks for pointing that out. We have a few V8 customers but they are all running on Windows Server 2003 32 bit.

With many 32 bit Operating Systems approaching end-of-life I would recommend upgrading to V10. Customers who have upgraded to V10 on our Hyper-V node have been very pleased with the performance.

The new 64 bit processors have built-in virtualization which makes the virtual machines faster under Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V (no hardware emulation layer needed)

                            Re: Windows 7

I successfully installed v8 runtime on a windows 7 professional 64 bit system (is a shadowed database)

what I had to do was this - right click on the install.exe and patch.exe and run in xp comp mode as admin

also did the same installing the pdf driver

also, do the same with the shortcut to open it

all went well, and the program runs fine

                            BUT

if I save a report as a PDF, although it saves it, it won't open it, says in use by someone or something else - wonder how to get around this part
                            otherwise ok
