Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Developers and V10 PDF Issue

Started to order V10, and then thought - hmmmm - if I install V10, then if I understand correctly, none of the pdf reports will work with any prior versions, regardless of the OS I am using - is that correct?

if so, how will developers with many versions like me deal with it?

maybe I could create a shortcut to the printer driver installer in each of the versions from V5, forward, and click on the appropriate one for what I am developing in. Haven't tried it yet. But might work. My main machine is currently XP Pro. Worst case, I may have to buy an additional machine with Windows 7, for V10 apps.

I'm a week into a new app, developing in V9, but want to move it to V10.

    Man, what a hassle!!!

    Martin,

No, not correct. Reports previously created in V7-9 will run fine to PDF in version 10. What I've reported is a problem with when running V9 and V10 on the same server. The most recently installed WAS determines which Alpha printer driver is running on the OS. So if its the V9 WAS, then V10 reports won't run, and visa versa.

Note - I just ran a report created in V9 where the application was converted to V10 and running in the V10 WAS. I did not touch the report in the 'conversion' process.

Martin my advice to you right now would be DONT GO THERE.
Having read your post I tried an application of mine which sends reports to a pdf file and inserts a PDF watermark.
Worked like a charm in V9 and became a huge selling point - does not work and produces an error in V10.
Words cannot adequately describe how sick and furious I feel right now.

Bob, I didn't try a watermarked PDF. How are you inserting the watermark, from within Alpha using code*, or outside of Alpha when it builds the PDF?

*I vaguely recall adding a watermark using xbasic, and there is no 'atermark field'in Alpha, but it's been awhile since I did a watermark.

          Steve

Below is an example of the code used - I am just in the process of submitting a bug report. All I know is it worked just fine In V9 but NOT V10 the error is an Adobe Error on opening the file created and I assume is down to the new PDF driver. This simply should not happen.

Nothing to do with Watermarks, only reports/letters as PDF.

We've tried to explain this problem to Selwyn. Our V9 Runtime users can print to pdf. When we upgrade to V10 Runtime and using the same application, the pdfs no longer work. Our only solution at present is to switch our V10 Runtime users BACK to V9, not an ideal situation!

Is this what you are experiencing?

On our development PCs everything is OK in both V9 and V10, it is only when we distribute the Runtime Apps that the problem occurs, not sure if this is because we have the full Alpha V10 version loaded or because we have the full Adobe software installed.

Re: Developers and V10 PDF Issue

With slight modification it works from the Code tab in V9 and 10. But I guess you are running it from a button on a form; I did not test for that.

I slightly changed it to fit my environment. This below prints the PDF with the PDF overlay. If I change WatermarkType to "text" it puts DRAFT on my PDF. So the bug you might have is running from a button if that's what you are doing.

My problem is I dont use Desktop often enough to see issues in that light. I did not think of trying it from a button on a Form, which is probably where the problem is.

How can I test your theory - I created a button and that as you note didnt work and then I created a script and ran that from a button and it didnt work.
How can I run the code directly against a record to test your idea, sorry if I'm being a little dense - this has me wound up

If you look at my version I removed the filter and the ":" in front of the last function. That allowed it to run on all record in the Code tab.

I did wonder if this was an Acrobat version issue but have created the pdf under Alpha 9 and Alpha 10 and tried to open with Acrobat reader 4 and reader 9 and in the case of both versions of Acrobat Reader the V9 generated file is fine and the V10 generated one is not.
