Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trouble with SQL Connection.

I have created a grid connecting to my SQL data. When i look in Preview the grid appears exactly as I want it and shows 339 records.

If I press live preview, I get the submit button and 0 records.

    What am I missing?

Did you use the [table] or SQL statement?

I used the table. There is no code to cause confusion either.

So it works in the mode that will be used for production, but doesn't work in the developer live preview?

I typically avoid live preview mode, which while nice, requires that I retest in a separate browser anyway. And I always make sure I test with the WAS programming running, but no A5 database open. Can't use live preview in that scenario.

Looks to me like you've accomplished a lot and you'll continue to accomplish more if you don't worry about testing in live preview mode.

Or is there something else that I'm missing?

What RDBS are you using [ type /version]
on your developer machine or productionserver?
what type of connect string are you using?

              Re: Trouble with SQL Connection.

              Hi Al, thanks for responding.

Bit of history on what I am doing - I was asked to redevelop an existing Access database to allow web access. I told the company it would be easier to do this in Alpha5 (Which I have never used, but always wanted to as I believed the advert about how easy it is)

They grudgingly agreed, have supplied me with a dedicated server and connection to the backend SQL tables.

All I have accomplished so far is to create some web components (Grids) which appear to work in preview mode, but do not show any records in Live preview.

I have tried creating an A5W page with the component on, but that gives a 403 error. My manager wants me to create a page, any page, that he can show his boss to indicate the project is moving forward.

That is where I am at - showing my boss my component and telling him it will be a web page soon :o

Any advice which leads to a functioning web page would be appreciated.

                Hi Eric,

I am connecting to MS SQL 2005.

I have Alpha on a dedicated server and the SQL data is on a seperate server hosting all SQL databases.

                My connection string is:

                {A5API='SQLServer',Server='SQLdevt11\nbcdevt11',Trusted_connection=yes,Database='Change_Builder'}

                I hope that helps

already asked "Did you try to publish to the application server" If so what is the outcome ? page error or what?

I get a page cannot be displayed error if I publish to the local webroot and open the page.

                        create component oke
                        run preview oke
                        run live preview ok
                        publish to WAS oke

                          Re: Trouble with SQL Connection.

I would like to thank Al and Eric for their assistance.

I had a company DBA come and check my connections and although we cannot get the existing forms to function correctly, we built some new ones which did.

I have decided to scrap the existing web project and start a new one and see if I can make it work this time.

Does anyone know how to remove/delete a web project :o
