Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Why is is my sql SELECT statement always returning .T.?

    I'm using Quickbooks QODBC to run a SELECT statement. I want to search the Quickbooks file for a specific customer. If he's not in Qbooks, I want to create him.
    This is the code:

    Code:
    dim sqlStatement as c
    sqlStatement = "SELECT FullName  FROM Customer  WHERE FullName = " + quote(jsite_acct)

    'Execute the Query
    flagResult = cn.Execute(sqlStatement)
    if flagResult = .f. then
    'create jobsite
    script_play("New Qbooks Jobsite")
    end if
    The "quote(jsite_acct)" statement returns the customer "FullName" in quotes. The syntax is fine, but the flagResult variable always comes back as true, even when it shouldn't find anyone.
    Any ideas what's causing this?

    Yes, what the flagresult is telling you is that the SQL statement executed.

    Now you can look at the result set and see what was returned...

    Here is sample code from the action script based select DAO .

    Code:

    'Execute a query on a SQL database
    'DIM a connection variable
    DIM cn as SQL::Connection
    dim flagResult as l
    flagResult = cn.open("::Name::Connection1")
    if flagResult = .f. then
     ui_msg_box("Error","Could not connect to database. Error reported was: " + crlf() + cn.CallResult.text)
     end
    end if
    'Specify if you are using Portable SQL syntax, or not
    cn.PortableSQLEnabled = .t.
    dim sqlStatement as c
    sqlStatement = <<%sql%
    select * from company
    %sql%
    'Execute the Query
    flagResult = cn.Execute(sqlStatement)
    if flagResult = .f. then
     ui_msg_box("Error",cn.CallResult.text)
     cn.close()
     end
    end if

    [SIZE=4][COLOR=red]'Here is where you can look at how many rows were returned...[/COLOR][/SIZE]
    'Don't loop through all of them, just figure out if there is one....
    'In you case the results should be zero or one..

    dim rs as sql::resultset
    rs = cn.ResultSet
    'This is sample code that shows you how to loop over the rows in the ResultSet
    dim flagLoop as l
    flagLoop = .t.
    while flagLoop
     'to read column values from the ResultSet, use then rs.Data() method, passing in either the column number or column name
     'e.g.   var = rs.Data(1)
     '  var = rs.Data("customerId")

     'if we are on the last row, rs.NextRow() will return .f. which will break out of this while loop
     flagLoop = rs.NextRow()

    end While

     'Now, close the connection
    cn.close()

      Thanks for the response. I misunderstood what I was getting.

      I added the line
      ui_msg_box("done",cn.CallResult.text) , and cn.CallResult.text = "Success"

      I guess it's telling me the query ran with success, but it still returns no records.

      What command do I use to find the number of records returned in the query?

        I just entered this . . .

        Code:
        dim query_result as c
        query_result = cn.resultset.ToString()
        if query_result = "" then
        . . . and it gets me what I want, but it seems kinda "sophomoric". By doing this, am I going to run into problems?

          Opps, sorry Al, didn't read all your code where you answered my question. Thanks.

            IF cn.execute(sql) then
            if cn.NextRow() then
            'returned a record
            else
            'no record found
            end if
            end if
