Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Dynamic Grid Control Dropdowns

    I've been at this for several hours, so solution yet.

    Very simple grid, two columns, both dropdown controls.

    Column1 is a dropdown list of tables. Got that handy and easy.

    Column2 is a dropdown list of fields. But the fields are the fields in the table selected in Column1. Change the table in column1, get a different list of fields in column2.

    Any ideas on how to achieve this dynamic population of the dropdown list for Column2?

    Steve,

    It looks like video 34 explains what you are trying to do click here Uh maybe not exactly, but it may give you a different way to do it.

      Well, kind of and almost Bill. I'd looked at that too. These are based on tables and require hard-coding of table names. I need dynamic table names that will then lead to dynamic field lists.

        Re: Dynamic Grid Control Dropdowns

        OK, I'm trying to build a custom control for the grid to present a different list of fields depending on what table name has been selected in the previous column. But, I'm getting an error whenever I try to save the grid with the custom control.

        To take every variable out that I can, the custom control code is this:

        Code:
        Field_render = <<%html%
        <select size="1" class="GlassBlueSelect" name="V.R-1.TABLE" id="POINTMASTER.V.R-1.TABLE">
        <option value="aaaa">aaaa</option>
        <option value="bbbb">bbbb</option>
        </select>
        %html%
        Once I get that working, I can replace various pieces as appropriate. But when I try to save the grid with the above code, I get an error dialog:

        Script: UI_DLG_BOX@wcb_title_var20094523 line;408
        save(lv)
        Property not found
        grid.custom_control subelement not found.

        Any ideas?

          I just tried similar with a custom field in grid section using latest a5 v10 build and cannot get it to work even with just the default render text. The grid will save but when page executed results in error Fatal error running a5_ajax_grid(): Property not found grid.custom_control subelement not found.

            Hi,

            If you take a step back. What you're looking at is the database metadata...

            In the oracle world I'm familiar with you could use the user_tab_columns view... this will show all the columns for all the tables/view in the schema you're logged in with...I'm sure other database favours will have something similar

              Steve,

              Instead of doing column2 as a drop down list, how about doing it as a lookup grid (or a lookup drop down)?

              Then you should be able to use dynamic filtering of the grid to achieve the result you want.

                Or try linked grid within a cell?
