Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

7 simple questions from a newbie

As a newcomer to AlphaFive, I have been faced with a couple of relatively basic issues when using the software in the last few days.

Could someone shed some light about how to:

    - Insert a .gif bitmap object (are only .bmp, .jpg, .png supported?)

    - When adding our own customized form icon (via form properties), can't we simply browse and select the file? Do we need to use the code?

    - Why when inserting a new bitmap object, the bitmap selection screen does not pup up automatically? Instead, we need to select the newly added bitmap frame on the form and go to properties to select the bitmap file.

    - How can we autofit the content of a browse column to its content (same as me.columname.columnwidth = -2 in VBA put on an "On Current" Event)

    - How can we have decimals of a record shown only if they exist. For instance: 2.00 would appear as 2 but 2.25 would appear as 2.25. In other words how can we make the .00 not to appear.

    - How to insert a sub-form (or browse) which is not part of a one to many relationship with the main form.

    - How can we change the source table/set of a form after the form has been created?

I have been trying to look at the User Guide and message board but could not find an answer to the above questions. My apologies for listing up so many questions at once.
if it is against the message board rules, please let me know.

    Thank You

    Thierry

Re: 7 simple questions from a newbie

    Hi Thierry,

It is not so much against the rules but just makes it very difficult to maintain the integrity of a thread with more than one question at a time. The other aspect to consider is when other users try to do a search, their result would be rather confusing.

That said, I'll answer this one.
how can we make the .00 not to appear
Format the field on the form or report, to show blank if value = 0.

Gif is not supported as it is proprietary to Compuserve without licensing. PNG is the new GIF

      I don't know offhand

Probably because that's how it was created. Add a request in Wishlist features section

There is an option like that in ListView objects of XDialog, I don't believe there is one for Browse. You could add a request in Wishlist features section. Using HTML grid objects on forms should allow this though.

Create a user format for the numeric field or convert to character and do the conversions to not show trailing decimals
      ""+numbervalue
      will do a simple conversion

Do you mean 1-to-1, or unrelated browse?

Use Copy To in menu to copy selected form/layout to another table/set

It's not against the rules, but tends to clutter up multiple answers. For best answers and responses, list in separate threads, and have a clear subject line as to the issue or problem. If you resolve a problem, report back so others can benefit.

          Keith, Ira,

Thank you very much for your support.
          All points cleared.

I understood your points about not mixing similar questions into a thread. Sorry, beginner's mistake ;)

I will rephrase the question about the sub-form issue in a separate thread.

The AlphaFive community is impressively helpful!

          Thank You
