Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: does anyone know of an alternative to refresh the screen

    Maybe I am doing something wrong, but I don't think this is solved. I can't get the grid refreshed when embedded in a tabbed UI or inside of a container in a page layout...

      Re: does anyone know of an alternative to refresh the screen

      You need to declare your javascript at the outer most level
      So if you use the UI then define your javascript there

      I believe thay a fix will be provided for this in the near future

        Re: does anyone know of an alternative to refresh the screen

        I'm trying something much simpler than this example but still can't get it to work, possibly because of the issues noted by wmz, but even when I run the grid outside the Tabbed UI (that it should eventually be in), I can't get the detail view to refresh.

        Shouldn't I just be able to add a button to the Detail View with a Javascript OnClick of {grid.Object}.detailViewRefresh();?

          Re: does anyone know of an alternative to refresh the screen

          To manually refresh the grid by pressing a button, you can do this :

          if you edit the freeform section above or below the grid, then switch to source mode, you can dd this html:

          <button onclick="{grid.object}.refresh()">Refresh Grid</button>

            Re: does anyone know of an alternative to refresh the screen

            Bob's javascript code works, BUT the problem is this:

            If you have the rowexpander on the grid and you have a row or more expanded it closes that on you and takes you back to the initial state of the gird.

            Is there a way to refresh the grid and leave the screen you're watching without a change ?

              Re: does anyone know of an alternative to refresh the screen

              From reading above, it seems that I am not the only one that cannot get the "auto refresh on focus" feature to do anything on a tabbed UI.

              I have implemented the timer code suggested above and it works, but it certainly is not a long term solution. It seems any top level grid (parent) that I have on a web page inside the UI does not refresh its data after the first open. Only way to get this is to refresh the entire UI, which blows up expanded trees, open tabs, etc, etc.

              Does anyone know if the auto refresh is being looked at by Alpha? An alternative would be for me to abandon the tabbed UI, but I really like the tabs as an interface for my app.

                Have you asked Alpha for a solution.

                  Wayne;

                  The Parent grids inside a tabbed Ui refreshe fine individually, that part is working, the only problem that I see now as I mentioned before several times is that when it does you lose the expanded records if you have any that's open, this is a real problem for some applications.

                  I have stopped working on an application that is very sensitive for time because of this issue, I have posted several threads and emailed Selwyn, they suggested to write our own script to do this.

                  I wish Alpha developers would look at this issue and have a solution for.

                    Peter,

                    I have searched for a way to submit bugs to Alpha on their site and this forum. I saw a "feature wish list", but do not see anything here or on their site to report what you believe to be a technical issue. They have "paid" support incididents. I guess I could email Selwyn, but that seems slightly rude.

                      How do you determine the grid objects name? In other ide's you assign a name to a control.

                        Wayne,
                        Am not Peter, but when Alpha is open, go to the top menu-->Help-->Send a Bug Report....Think this applies to all versions since v6.

                          Good grief.

                          I tested it in "Chrome", just to make sure this was not an IE issue before I pushed it up the ladder. Lo' and behold, the feature (refresh tab on focus in a tabbed UI) works fine in a different browser.

                          I will go play with my settings in IE and find out what the offender is.

                            Re: does anyone know of an alternative to refresh the screen

                            This isn't the answer to what's above, but in the following situation, it works great.

                            I have a customer that has an order entry application we are building in a tabbed UI and on one of the tabs he has a page with two independent grids. The top grid is for selecting and adding products to the order lines and the bottom grid shows all the current line items. He had to use separate grids because his product dropdown wouldn't work with it all in one grid.

                            Anyway, the tabbed UI creates an iFrame, so we looked at the page source for the frame and found the id for the second grid, lets call it MYGRID. Then we added the folowing code to the first grid in the Javascript system event "afterGridSubmit":

                            MYGRID_GridObj.refresh();

                            works like a charm to refresh the second grid.

                              Just as a follow-up and in the interest of someone else not wasting hours, I found the offending setting in internet explorer which was causing a page that is opened in a tabbed UI to not display the most recent data. This would happen on the 2nd open of only some grids within a tabbed UI without a refresh.

                              You have to change your browse history settings: How often IE looks for a newer page.

                              Pic attached.
