Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Export/Import Layouts

Is there a way to allow Runtime users to import layouts. Other than from the control panel and default control panel menu, I don't see much.

Exporting/sending layouts seems a very useful method to get revised forms etc to users but if they need access to the control panel the value diminishes.

I would like something set up in action scripting to accommodate this. Maybe it could specify a folder and import any layouts contained in a folder, then delete the files in the folder.

    Re: Export/Import Layouts

    Hi Russ,

There is the Export/Import routines from Jim Chapman.

I have these on buttons on a Utility form, available only to authorized users.

The Import looks for the file type, checks that it can match up to a table and then deletes it after the Import.

    The routine also does Operations.

    Check out the Code Archive.

Thanks Keith, I had forgotten these. The built in one in v10 is nice if I can use it with runtime. If not I'll use Jim's.

      Thanks,

        Re: Export/Import Layouts

        Hi Russ,

While it will be easy for you the developer to export a layout, here are the instructions for the Client doing the Import.
Then, once the client receives the file, they simply right-click on white space in the Control Panel and select Import Layout
As you know with Jim's routines you can put a button on a form for the Client to use.

Unless you are happy for them to get to the CP?

I wiped out a complex screen in my DB but I have it save in an earlier, archived copy. I tried to cut & paste between the 2 rev levels but it didn't work.

I looked in the Code Archives for a utility that can do this but had no success.

          Any help would be appreciated.

Reinstall one of the older versions in a different directory.
Right click on the form, export.
              Open the new version
Right click in CP, import, select form.

                Russ,
Instead of letting clients worry about importing layouts, why not just send the client the ddd, ddm and ddx files (or set, sem and sex files for sets)?

That is how I have always handled my clients' upgrades, and it has worked quite well.

If the client doesn't write their own objects, that works pretty well.

If they do, then that can over write what the client has done.

Another way to handle this is to work with a set that is for the developer and one that is for the client. Then all that is transferred is are the 3 files for the set.

(and a set can be one table or multiple tables linked together.)

A second way I've accomplished this is to have a table with a single field that I copy an object to, transfer the support files from one computer to another, and then copy to the table/set on the target computer.

btw, I do like Jim's utility. I also use it a lot.

                    Re: Export/Import Layouts

All good methods. Right now I'm there enough that I can just zip the whole thing and unzip it in the office. I'd like to do more remotely though. The methods will work but it would be nice if alpha would just build this into action scripting. It's sort of a common use. Short of that I'll use Jim Chapmans routine. I am a bit leery of having someone copy files as it opens up the possibility (probability) that they will screw it up in some way.

                    Thanks,
                    Russ

Keith, you give reference to a routine created by Jim Chapman for Exporting / Importing, can you give me an idea where I can find this code. I would like to Export/Import form layouts created by myself to put on other computers using V9 without having to "design" the form again. V10 has the ability of right clicking on the form and choosing export layout (.a5pkg file) and then it can by exported then imported by right clicking and choosing import layout. Similar to exporting / importing scripts and functions. Thanks.... Jon

As far as I know, the backup is a data dictionary format, and can use those methods. To restore a specific object, there is the function a5_backup_dd_object_restore(), although I have never used it. I suspect it would add the object to the shadow of that user if using that, otherwise the master.
