Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha Calendar, Flash Calendar Drag and Drop

As you might now know Alpha Calendar Pro is an alpha five app that lets you connect your Alpha Five Tables (or SQL) to Flash Calendar(the third party calendar software) without having to code anything.

Some people have ask me for drag and drop functionality on Alpha Calendar Pro which to this date is not possible (Maybe version 2.0 will have it).

In the other hand Flash Calendar does has this functionality by its self on what they call the Administrative Mode, the drawback is that the info would not be stored in your tables (it is automatically stored in an Xml file that works as a back end) besides some of the other nit features you get when using Alpha Calendar Pro with Flash Calendar like filtering the events in the calendar by logged user or any other session variable you want.

Because some people might find this kind off setup useful I prepared the next video on how to setup Flash calendars administrative mode

    http://screencast.com/t/MjIyYTNkZW

With that said Alpha Calendar Pro could be of great help even on this scenario because if you already have a table with events alpha calendar would export it automatically to the XML file so you can start using the calendar, besides you can change the look and labels of the calendar without having to manually edit the xml files and without coding

NOTE: when using Alpha Calendar Pro Full Functionality you dont need to install a PHP server or any additional software other than Alpha Five, Flash Calendar and Alpha Calendar Pro

Re: Alpha Calendar, Flash Calendar Drag and Drop

there is one more thing you should change in the Apache config file that I forgot to mention
Search for "<Directory" and set the path to your webroot (the same path you wrote on the "DocumentRoot" setting)

      eg
      <Directory "C:/A5Webroot">

So in total you will change 4 settings in the httpd.conf file
      1. Listen (your Port)
      2. ServerName (your computer name : your port)
      3. DocumentRoot (path to a5webroot)
      4. Directory (path to a5webroot)
      Cheers

Re: Alpha Calendar, Flash Calendar Drag and Drop

Looks like FileMaker will soon offer a calendar with full drag and drop abilitities to change the database when calendar items are moved to a different date. I hope someday Alpha Five developers will also have similar functionality.

You mentioned that drag and drop functionality may be available with version 2.0. Does this mean that the drag and drop is dependent on this control and not on Alpha Five? Is there something that Alpha Five has done in their design that inherently prevents Alpha Five applications from having a smooth drag and drop action.

Sneak Peek: Our Next FileMaker Calendar

Faster, easier to modify, and now with drag & drop
We've been rethinking our calendar template since we first got our hands on FileMaker10. Would this let us make the calendar faster? Could we make something simple enough it could be pasted into your own files? And could we finally get drag and drop working without plugins?

Check out this preview and see how close we are.

We should be releasing this soon and wanted to share this with those of you who are already using our calendar or who are planning to.

Get your questions answered, or ask some: it's still early, but learn about what our plans are for features, upgrades paths, and make suggestions here: SeedCode: Next

If you know someone you think might be able to use this: tell them about it. FWD this to them and ask them to subscribe to this newsletter where we'll make our next announcements.

The new calendar can use your existing events table(s), and pastes into your file. So keep building what you're working on, knowing that you'll be able to add this calendar to it.

Bolting on a calendar is a great way to add a ton of value to existing solutions without a lot of effort. So if you need a calendar right now, buy SeedCode Calendar Pro and get a free upgrade to the new one when it ships.

Re: Alpha Calendar, Flash Calendar Drag and Drop

Altough Alpha Calendar will let you connect Flash Calendar to your tables in A5 (or sql), Flash Calendar as its name Implies is a Flash plugin so its functionality is independent from that of Alpha Five.

You should notice that Drag n Drop functionality isn't a that common on web apps in general (Alpha , PHP, ASP etc.) this is because HTML was not originally created for the development and deployment of applications (HTML 5 will supposedly change that).
I Know there are some people that are doing some experimentation with drag n drop functionality on Alpha Five v10 through the use of third party JavaScript libraries and other techniques I just chose this plugin because of all its functionality and the fact that it uses XML as a source which makes it simpler to connect to any database,

FileMaker must be using one of this technique/plugins I mentioned besides the power and flexibility of alpha with their Codeless Ajax is far superior to any RAD software in the market right now, FileMaker just feels like you are "boxed" to a bunch of predefined templates.
          Cheers
