Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Odd Behavior with Windows 7 (I Think)

Let me start out by saying that i'm not a programmer. I've noticed an odd behavior with Alpha Five versions 8 and 10, and Windows 7 on a computer with a 64 bit processor. I developed databases in Alpha 5 v8 which contained buttons on a form which activated either crosstab or summarization operations. The buttons worked fine on Windows XP on a computer with a 32 bit processor.

Recently I purchased a computer with a 64 bit processor and Windows 7 Home Edition. I transferred Alpha 5 v8 to that computer. When I clicked on the buttons to perform the summerization or crosstab operations, a Windows 7 dialog box would open stating that "The program had stopped working" and Alpha 5 v8 would close.

Thinking it was a Windows 7 or 64 bit processing problem, I purchased Alpha 5 v10 and installed it on the 64 bit processing computer with Windows 7. The same dialog box opens up and Alpha Five shuts down.

Not sure if its a Windows 7 problem, a 64 bit operating system problem, or just me.

I am posting this to ask if anyone else has experienced a similar behavior with Alpha 5. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Question: Where do you have your data stored?

With Vista & Windows 7 you cannot have the data stored in with program files as you can with XP. This is a security feature. The data must be in a separate sub-directory of the data directory.

Sounds like this may be the problem.

Thanks for your reply. However, the data and program files are stored in different directories, so I don't believe that this is the source of the problems I described in my earlier post. Since my earlier post, I've also noticed that some mathematical calculations which normally occured when a form was opened, no longer do so.

Perhaps, there are functional operations, which when developed in a previous version of Alpha 5, will not operate properly in current version due to program differences. (Just my 2-cents worth.)

        Hi,

You may wish to review the following web page. Kindly click on the link on that web page where it says: "Can I run 32-bit programs on a 64-bit computer". This may be the answer you are looking for unless somebody from Alpha could answer your question at hand. Enjoy your holidays!

        Regards,

        Pat

Is it possible to post a database demonstrating the problem? We could then try it and confirm whether it is a problem with win 7 or not. I have win 7 64 and 32 bit running...

Thank you for your replies Patd and Bill Griffin.

Patd, happy holidays to you too. The website you recommended did not provide me with any new insights into my problem, but thank you kindly for the link.

Bill Griffin, I have been a long time customer of your company. Love many of your products. The database I refer to is a dental database which has confidential data, so I would prefer not to upload it. However, I have a bicycling database which also shows the same behavior. After opening the database, clicking on the summarization buttion in the main menu and then one of the summarizations should result in the behavior that I have described in my first post.

Thanks in advance to everyone who is helping me.

I tried the bicycle database and all works fine. (very nice looking)

This was on V10 Windows 7 64 bit. Also OK on 32 bit Version of Win 7.

              I hate when that happens.

              What build are you on?

Build 2625_3509. I believe it is the current build.

The only difference is that I am running 2614_3507. You can give that a shot..

Reverted to build 3507, but had no luck solving my problem. Thanks for your help Bill. At least I know now the problem is with my computer and not the Alpha 5 software. Perhaps my McAfee firewall or some other setting is causing the problem. I'll investigate further.

Re: Odd Behavior with Windows 7 (I Think)

Well I've isolated another problem to the operations tab in the control panel. If I select an operation and click on the design icon, I get an error message and Alpha 5 v10 closes.

My best guess is that there is some setting in Windows 7 that is preventing me from performing any database operations in Alpha 5 v8 or 10. May have to scrap v10 and go back to using v8 on the old pentium with Windows XP.

Very strange - just tried it here, no problem. I used your bicycle DB.

I also turned UAC back on and still no problems. I tried this on 64 and 32 bit versions of the OS.

Where (what folder - full path, please) do you have the application in?

The program is in Program Files (x86) and the data is in a different directory I call My Documents/Alpha5 Databases.

Hmm - that is fine - I just moved your database to program files(x86) and it worked there as well.

Have you tried redownloading the original install package and reinstalling it? (I would uninstall V10 first)

Right click on the V10 Icon, choose properties, on the compatability tab select run in compatability mode for XP (service pack 3) and see if that helps...

Reinstalled v 10 3 times and tried all the compatibility modes. No luck. I really suspect that there is a conflict on my computer with either the hardware or software and this is whats causing Alpha 5 not to work properly.
